When does a business actually need three-phase power?

It's a question that often comes up when new machinery, air conditioning, EV charging or other higher-powered equipment is being installed.

Our latest blog explains what three-phase power is, what's involved in upgrading from a single-phase supply, what affects the cost, how to plan for future capacity and where the DNO fits into the process.

If you're expanding your premises or planning new equipment, it's worth understanding the electrical requirements before you commit.

We've just published a new blog on fire alarm and emergency lighting compliance. Covering what the law requires, what testing schedules look like in practice, how addressable systems reduce false alarms, and what changed when BS 5839-1 was updated in April 2025.

It's a practical read for anyone who's responsible for a commercial building and wants to understand what ‘compliant’ actually means beyond just having a system installed.

Fire alarms and emergency lighting are easy to forget about… until they become a problem.

The legal responsibility for maintaining them sits with the ‘responsible person’ for your premises: typically the business owner, employer, or whoever controls the building. That means documented servicing, regular testing, and records you can produce if a fire safety inspection comes your way.

MeKo offers maintenance contracts for fire alarm and emergency lighting systems across Gloucestershire. Straightforward, properly documented, and carried out to current standards. If you're not sure when your systems were last properly serviced, give us a call. 01453 764531.

False fire alarms are frustrating, and they're not as random as they seem.

More often than not, they come from a detector in the wrong location or the wrong type for the environment. Smoke detectors near a kitchen, a canteen, or anywhere with steam or dust are a common source.

If your premises has a regular nuisance alarm problem, the cause is usually identifiable. We can take a look at your system, assess the detector placement, and recommend a fix without assuming the answer is a brand new system.

We've just published a new blog on LED lighting upgrades: what they actually save, what's involved, and why the maintenance cost reduction is often as significant as the energy saving.

There's also a section on emergency lighting compliance, which catches a few people out when they change their lighting layout without reviewing their emergency provision.

Worth a read if you're thinking about an upgrade, or if it's been a while since you looked at your lighting setup. Link in comments.

If you're a business owner or facilities manager, here's a quick question: when did you last have your emergency lighting tested and certified?

Under fire safety law, emergency lighting needs to be maintained and tested regularly and the records need to be kept. It's one of those things that tends to get pushed down the list until an insurance renewal or a fire safety audit brings it back up.

We offer emergency lighting testing and certification for commercial premises across Gloucestershire. Straightforward, documented, no jargon. Give us a call on 01453 764531.

Still replacing fluorescent tubes or metal halide lamps in your business premises? You're probably spending more than you need to on energy, on maintenance, and on the disruption that comes with getting to hard-to-reach fittings.

LED upgrades have become one of the most straightforward investments a commercial or industrial business can make. Payback periods are typically three to five years, fittings last ten to fifteen years without replacement, and the light quality is noticeably better.

We carry out LED conversions for businesses across Gloucestershire; offices, warehouses, retail units, and industrial facilities. We’re happy to do an assessment and show you what the numbers would look like for your premises. 01453 764531.
