This Rail Safety Week, we’re focusing on the importance of communication.

As part of our ongoing commitment to safety, we regularly hold regional Safety Stand Down days across the UK.

These sessions provide an opportunity for teams from across the Group to come together, share best practices in health and safety, highlight potential challenges, and refresh their knowledge of key topics.

There are also breaks before and after these sessions for everyone take part in health surveillances, which include voluntary bowel, ovarian, and prostate screenings.

By holding these regular sessions, our operational teams are reassured that any issues raised will be addressed, while also ensuring accountability at every level.

We recently brought together our England & Wales managers and senior leaders for our regional managers meeting.

The session provided an opportunity for teams to come together, share updates on ongoing works, and openly discuss challenges and potential barriers.

The key theme throughout the day was communication! To support this, we delivered sessions on Psychological Safety, Water Safety, Learning & Development, and Engineering, designed to strengthen both our people and our operations.

Regular forums like this play a role in keeping our managers informed and aligned. By ensuring consistent communication and shared understanding, we enable vital information to be effectively cascaded across teams, ensuring that everyone goes home safe, every day on the railway.

Last week, our REL team wrapped up the Severn Tunnel blockade, a 15-day project that accumulated more than 37,000 person hours across 31 shifts.

Working through changing weather conditions above ground, as well as extreme conditions within the tunnel, our teams delivered in one of the most demanding environments on the UK rail network. Together, we achieved:

🟧Removing 7,216m of ROC system
🟧Installing 14,000m of parallel feeder
🟧Installing and tensioning 7,598m of contact wire
🟧Capturing 59,500 quality assurance data points

We are incredibly proud of the teams involved in delivering this mammoth project, which truly highlights the precision, resilience, and high standards we stand by.

Over the weekend, a team from QTS took part in Tough Mudder Scotland, helping to raise money for the Glasgow Children's Hospital Charity and the British Heart Foundation.

The team had great fun getting involved in all the different obstacles and getting muddy along the way.

Keep an eye out for another team of challengers who will be taking on Tough Mudder Yorkshire in July!

If you are able to, please consider donating towards the amazing charities here - https://lnkd.in/eZgnApYC

Some of our teams recently attended North Lakes School, where we removed damaged and unused raised flower beds to create more space for outdoor learning and socialising for students.

Despite challenging access, with works carried out through a classroom, our operatives removed the beds by hand and cleared all debris safely.

A fantastic result for the team, helping to create a more open, usable space that the school can enjoy for years to come.

Last week we held our Scotland Civils safety stand down.

Staff members heard from Scotland's Railway, health and safety, occupation health and fantastic guest speaker John Hartson offering advice on coping with illness and addiction.

They also took part in team building and behavioural science sessions to look at how we operate safely and efficiently.

We recently welcomed students from St John Ogilvie High School, to our Rench Farm HQ as part of the GROW Project.

QTS continues to work in partnership with DYW Glasgow to support young people in gaining valuable insight into a range of industries and experiencing real-life work tasters.

During their visit, students had the opportunity to meet members of our team including Jane McFadzean (Social Value), Keith Lyall (HSQE), Cayleb Stuart (Trainee Civil Engineer) and Cameron Couston (Environmental).

The session included a site visit around the Rench, a mini-induction, and hands-on STEM activities designed to showcase the breadth of career opportunities available.
