New website now live

I’m pleased to say the new Thomas Damp Surveys website is now up and running:

www.thomasdamp.com

The aim was to make it much clearer what I do and why it matters.

Thomas Damp Surveys provides independent damp, moisture and timber inspections for homeowners, buyers, sellers, landlords and estate agents. I do not carry out remedial works and I do not sell damp-proofing, so the advice is based on the evidence found during the inspection.

A large part of my work is helping people after damp has been raised in a homebuyer, building or RICS survey. The purpose of my inspection is to establish what is actually happening before anyone spends money on unnecessary or incorrect repairs.

The new website explains the service, the inspection process, the areas covered and the type of issues I assess, including damp readings, condensation, penetrating damp, timber concerns, salt damage, ventilation issues and suspected rising damp.

Not every high moisture reading means rising damp.

This is why an independent inspection can be so useful.

When damp or moisture is flagged in a property, the important thing is to understand why it is happening. The cause could be ventilation, condensation, external defects, ground levels, rainwater goods, cold surfaces, leaks, bridging, or a combination of factors.

At Thomas Damp Surveys, I carry out independent damp and moisture inspections across Worcestershire and surrounding counties.

I use moisture readings, visual inspection and practical building knowledge to help identify what is actually going on — and just as importantly, what can be ruled out.

I do not sell damp-proofing or remedial treatments, so the advice is focused on evidence rather than selling unnecessary work.

Behind the plaster at a Victorian property in Worcester. A situation where assumptions could easily have been made before the wall was opened up and properly assessed.

Older buildings often behave very differently to modern houses, especially at lower ground level, and moisture readings alone rarely tell the full story.

This was flagged as possible damp at low level — but look closely at the pattern.

You’ve got:

Localised staining
Mould growth along the skirting line
Patchy wall finish

This is exactly the sort of situation where it’s easy to jump to the wrong conclusion.

In many cases like this, it comes down to condensation, airflow, and surface temperature, not a structural damp issue.
