Materials required to install chain-link fence
We are often asked “How far apart should I space the posts for a run of chain-link fence” and “what materials do I need for a chain link fence”.
The guide below should help you to select the correct quantity of posts and fittings.
If you are erecting a new chain-link fence using our post system you will require:
End Post. Required at the start and finish of your fence. This post includes an upright post, 1 bracing strut and fixing brackets, 1 tension bar, and sufficient winders and additional brackets required to tension the line wire.
Intermediate post. Spaced every 3 metres for garden boundary fences and from 2.5 – 2.7 metres, for heavier security fence.
Two-way intermediate post. Required every 25m. This is an in-line post which stops and restarts the fence. This post includes an upright post, 2 bracing struts and fixing brackets, 2 tension bars, and sufficient winders and additional brackets required to tension the line wire.
Corner post. This stops and restarts the fence through a 90 degree angle. This post includes of an upright post, 2 bracing struts and fixing brackets, 2 tension bars, and sufficient winders and additional brackets required to tension the line wire.
Change of direction. For a 90 degree corner chose the Corner post above. If the angle is not 90 degrees, purchase a corner post and adjust the brackets provided by clamping firmly in a vice and bending to the required angle with strong grips.
Line wire
For 900 mm height fence 2 runs of wire. (For each 25m fence 1 x 50m coil of wire)
For 1200 mm height fence 3 runs of wire. (For each 25m fence 1 x 75m coil of wire)
For 1800 mm height fence 3 runs of wire. (For each 25m fence 1 x 75m coil of wire)
For 2400 mm height fence 4 runs of wire. (For each 12.5m fence 1 x 50m coil of wire)
Tools and clips
You will require a Single clip tool. This tool connects the line wire directly to the spine of the post, using a hog ring clip. This tool will also clip the chain link fence to the line wire.
For large runs of fence you may wish to consider an additional automatic hog-ring plier. This will speed up the job of connecting the fence to the line wire.
