Up and out early today! Thursdays start with attending the weekly meeting of the Macclesfield chapter of BNI.

I’ve been a member for many years and find this style of networking incredibly beneficial to our business. Today, I had the opportunity to present to the room on all things UTSS: what we do, how we deliver, and the key sectors we support.

Ever wondered how surveyors map complex terrain hidden under thick trees or along busy infrastructure?

Complex terrain hidden under dense trees or along busy infrastructure doesn't always require traditional boots-on-the-ground mapping.

LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) is one of the primary tools we rely on at UTSS to overcome difficult terrain.

At its core, LiDAR works by emitting thousands of harmless laser pulses per second toward the target area and measuring the split-second it takes for the light to reflect.

This enables accurate, reliable site data for several key reasons:

* Penetrates dense cover: Laser pulses pass through small gaps in foliage, allowing us to map the actual ground level beneath heavily vegetated areas, forests, or overgrown riverbanks.
* Improves safety and access: Mounted to our unmanned aerial vehicles (drones), LiDAR captures precise data across hazardous or restricted corridors, such as railways and waterways, without putting surveyors in high-risk zones.
* Builds accurate 3D models: The collected data translates directly into high-density Digital Surface Models, giving a precise layout of the landscape.

Using remote sensing tools like LiDAR ensures we deliver complete and precise survey results on challenging sites while keeping safety at the forefront.

UTSS UTILITY TRANSMISSION SURVEY SOLUTIONS. From the air to underground and all in between.

With over 30 years in the energy sector, we pride ourselves on integrity, responsibility, and an expert understanding of our clients' needs. While our roots are in electrical engineering, we provide comprehensive solutions across construction, utility services, rail networks, and quarries.

Offering bespoke topographical surveys & mass data capture

At UTSS, we utilise the latest technologies, from traditional surveying methods to 3D laser scanning and UAVs, which offer bespoke surveys and mass data capture that some traditional methods do not allow.

Capturing fast, pinpoint-accurate site data isn’t just about having the right tools—it’s about knowing how to make that data useful for the client.

To keep our workflows as sharp as possible, the UTSS team uses the GeoMate GS100 handheld SLAM scanner. Combining GNSS RTK, laser scanning, and visual positioning into one handheld system, it allows us to walk a site and build detailed, geo-referenced 3D point clouds in real time.

Whether we are:

Surveying overhead power lines and vegetation clearance, mapping open utility trenches or calculating fast, accurate stockpile volumes for cut-and-fill analysis.

Using the latest kit, such as the GS100, gives us incredible coverage in environments where traditional survey setups would struggle or take far longer. Saving the client time and budget.

High-end kit is only half the story. Its raw point cloud data doesn’t solve a problem on its own. The real value comes from experienced surveyors processing that data, checking it against rigorous standards, and turning millions of data points into clean, clear CAD models, topographical maps, and actionable design drawings.

Investing in modern capture technology lets us work faster and more safely on-site, but it’s the expertise back in the office that delivers the precision deliverables our clients rely on.

Get in touch with the UTSS team to discuss how we can support your next survey project.

What is ...As-Built Utility Mapping?
When new cables, water pipes, or gas mains are installed in the ground, soil conditions and buried obstacles almost always require site tweaks. The final layout rarely reflects the original design plans.

To capture what’s actually down there, we map the utilities immediately after installation while the trenches are still open.

Our process combines two things:

1. Open-trench surveying: Taking exact location and depth measurements while the asset is exposed.
2. Electronic verification: When needed, we can also use CAT & Genny and GPR before overlaying the data onto Ordnance Survey (O/S) base maps.

Mapping while the ground is open gives clients a genuine, accurate record—saving a massive amount of time, money, and head-scratching for whoever has to dig there next.

UTSS is built on a foundation of surveys for Electrical Engineering, but our survey, design, and data capabilities now support infrastructure projects right across the UK.

A quick look at some of our sectors:
🔹 Energy & Renewables – Overhead line surveys, bespoke solar/wind connection designs, and GS6 compliance clearances.
🔹 Utilities & Rail – Nationwide TOPO surveys and PAS 128-compliant underground utility mapping.
🔹 Construction & Architecture – Full site support including cut-and-fill analysis, setting out, and 3D spatial models.
🔹 Quarrying & Archaeology – Volumetric stockpile surveys, drone photography, and subsurface sensing for active dig sites.

Same engineering standards, applied across every environment.

From underground cable clearance to 3D site mapping, our team, from time to time, has the pleasure of supporting archaeological site work.

When excavating land, preventing damage to existing buried utilities is always the first step. But beyond cable avoidance, Richard and the UTSS team are able to help solve a few extra site challenges along the way:

* Instant 3D Site Scanning: Using a Total Station, we captured 3D scans of the trenches directly onto an Ordnance Survey (OS) referenced plan. This gives the client an accurate digital record to keep analysing long after the dig is backfilled.

* Rapid Aerial Photography: In under 10 minutes, we provided high-definition drone shots of the layout, overcoming tricky raking light conditions and replacing outdated satellite imagery.

"I really do get the feeling when the UTSS team is on site, they truly care about the project, and they want to produce the best results possible for us." Sarah Weston - Archaeologist.

Out in Cheshire today delivering setting-out services for a new timber frame house build.

Once a project moves from paper to the construction phase, setting out bridges the gap between design and physical ex*****on. We liaise directly with project managers, site engineers, and architects to accurately transfer design drawings onto the ground.

Our team establishes the vital physical markers required on-site; these include

• Site and the plot’s boundaries

• Wall centre lines

• Exact extent, angles, and finished building levels

• Key infrastructure and structural points.

Need precise setting out for your next project? Get in touch.
