A little extra security for the home office 🔐

🔑 We’ve been a little quiet on here lately… but definitely not quiet on the tools!

☀️ It’s been a very busy summer for us at LA Locksmiths.

🥵 The hot weather has kept us particularly busy with UPVC and composite doors expanding, dropping and becoming difficult to lock, alongside the usual emergency callouts and repairs.

🏠 We’ve also helped quite a few people who have recently moved house and wanted the locks changed before settling into their new home. You never really know how many copies of the old keys are still floating around, so it’s one of those jobs that’s worth getting sorted.

🏭 And it’s not just houses. We’ve been carrying out plenty of work for local businesses too, from commercial locks and mechanical code locks to general door security.

🚪 Think you need a new door? You might not.

This customer was struggling to lock their UPVC front door and had been told they may need a complete replacement.

After inspecting the door, we found the problem was a failed gearbox inside the locking mechanism. We replaced the faulty part, adjusted the door and had everything working smoothly again.

A lot of UPVC door problems can be repaired without the expense of replacing the whole door, so it’s always worth getting it checked first.

If your door is becoming stiff, difficult to lock or the handle feels harder to lift, don’t ignore it. Catching the problem early can often prevent a bigger repair later.

‼️ A real break-in we attended recently. The handle and lock were attacked, car keys were taken, and the car was stolen. We upgraded the door with high-security handles and cylinders to help prevent it happening again.

⚠️ Sadly, we attended a break-in in Newcastle-under-Lyme where the customer’s door handle and lock had been attacked, their car keys were taken, and the car was stolen.

This is why door security really matters.

A lot of standard UPVC door handles and locks don’t offer the level of protection people assume they do. Once they’ve been targeted, it can be a very upsetting and expensive lesson.

We upgraded the handles and locks to give the customer much better protection and peace of mind going forward.

🌊 Today is World Oceans Day 🌊

Not our usual lock, door or UPVC repair post… but anyone who knows me knows I love scuba diving and anything to do with the ocean.

It’s a good reminder that even small actions matter, whether that’s cutting down on plastic, looking after our beaches, or simply appreciating how incredible the sea really is.

🔥 Is your UPVC door suddenly not locking properly in this heat?

With the hot weather, UPVC doors can expand slightly, and if the door is already a bit out of alignment, the heat can make the problem worse.

Common signs are:

✅ The handle feels stiff
✅ You have to lift the handle harder than normal
✅ The key won’t turn properly
✅ The door catches on the frame
✅ The door locks fine in the morning but gets worse later in the day

Please don’t force it. That can snap the mechanism or gearbox and turn a simple adjustment into a more expensive repair.

🔧 Broken door closer replaced for a commercial customer in Newcastle-under-Lyme.

The old closer had failed, so we supplied and fitted a new commercial door closer to help the door close safely, smoothly and reliably ✅

🔥 Fire safety detail landlords and property managers shouldn’t ignore.

This flat door in Stafford had the mortice lock upgraded to a euro mortice lock with an internal thumbturn.

Why does that matter?

If someone needs to get out quickly, especially in an emergency, they shouldn’t have to search for a key on the inside of the door.

A thumbturn allows the door to be unlocked from inside without a key, while still keeping the outside secure with a key-operated cylinder.
