1st room completely finished of a 3 storey property started this week, all walls and ceilings finished in Silk going to a Matt finish

This bedroom was previously finished in cream & green silk, and has now been transformed to a clean matt white finish.

Going from silk to matt isn't always as simple as just painting straight over it. Because silk leaves a smooth, slightly shiny surface, the walls were thoroughly sanded to remove the sheen and create a good key for the new paint.

It's one of those preparation jobs that doesn't really get noticed once everything is finished, but it can make a big difference.

Painting matt directly over a poorly prepared silk surface can potentially lead to poor adhesion, crazing/cracking, bubbling or the new paint peeling away, sometimes taking further layers with it.

A fair amount of time went into the sanding and preparation before the brushes and rollers came out, but it's worth doing properly.

Woodwork & radiator finished in Satin White

A further bedroom,ensuite and shower room will be completed today that will be top floor completed

Unfortunately, I didn’t manage to get photos of the full completed job, apart from this one.

This is one of two bare galvanised metal gates, along with balcony and step railings done a couple weeks ago

A big improvement from bare metal and now protected against the elements for years to come.

The old Hovis bakery is finally finished! 🎨🍞

Thankyou to the owners for looking after me on the job

I’ll be honest, when I first started this job, I was a bit ashamed that I had no idea just how much history this building had.

Since speaking to the owners and hearing stories from local people who remembered coming here years ago, I’ve become genuinely fascinated by it. From the old coal-fired bread oven to the memories people have shared about buying bread here, it’s been much more than just another painting job.

The only problem is that ever since learning about its Hovis connection, I cannot get that old Hovis advert out of my head! Think I've even been humming it whilst painting 😂

The little lad struggling to push his bread bike up a steep cobbled hill while music plays in the background. He finally reaches the top looking like he’s just completed the Tour de France, all to deliver a loaf of bread! Then whizzes down the cobbles 😂

It’s been a real privilege to help brighten up a building with so much local history. A huge thank you to everyone who stopped for a chat, shared memories and told me stories about the bakery.

Jobs like this remind me that painting and decorating isn’t always just about changing the colour of a building — sometimes it’s about helping preserve a little piece of the past.

I just hope I’ve done this wonderful old building justice with the finished paintwork.

🏢 A Building Full of Stoke-on-Trent History
Currently starting work on the exterior of the historic former bakery

The building has a long connection with the baking trade and is still remembered locally for its association with Hovis, when independent bakeries were supplied with Hovis flour and proudly displayed the famous name on their premises.

One of the most fascinating features is the original coal-fired oven still inside the building, which the owner kindly showed me — a real reminder of how bread would have been baked here many years ago.

It’s great to be working on a building with so much local character and history.
The exterior work includes:

🎨 Painting the brickwork
🎨 Preparing and painting the window ledges
🎨 Painting above the windows
🎨 Preparing and painting the shutters
🎨 Freshening up the surrounding exterior details

There’s plenty of preparation involved, but it’s already beginning to look cleaner, sharper and ready for its next chapter.

I’d also love to hear from anyone who remembers visited here back in the day, worked here, delivered here, or has parents, grandparents or other relatives with memories or stories connected to the bakery.

Since starting work on the building, so many local people have stopped to chat, ask what it is going to become and share their own memories of the old bakery.

Some of the stories have been absolutely fascinating, from people who remember shopping there themselves to those whose parents or grandparents worked there or used the bakery years ago.

It really shows just how much history and meaning this building still holds for the local community.

Exterior render recently completed on the front elevation and gable end, finished in crisp white with the window sills painted in Honey Mustard.

This was a particularly awkward project with very limited access, meaning the majority of the work had to be completed using a long-reach pole system.

Despite the challenging conditions, every effort was made to achieve the best possible finish.

This hallway, landing and stairs have been transformed using Dulux Trade Natural Hessian, giving the home a warm, fresh and timeless finish.

One wall required plastering before decorating, which was completed by DG Plasterers and Son —a great job that provided the perfect surface for a quality finish.

✨ Kitchen & Utility Room Completed ✨
A recently completed kitchen and utility room finished in White and Honey Mustard.

Before any paint went on, both rooms required extensive preparation due to peeling ceilings and damaged plaster.

Time was spent removing loose material, repairing the surfaces, and ensuring everything was properly prepared before painting.

As always, preparation is the foundation of a quality finish, and taking the time to do it properly makes all the difference.
