🚧 Drainage Clearance & Drain Fly Investigation 🚧

Last week we carried out a CCTV drainage survey after ongoing drainage and drain fly issues. During the survey, we found the system was completely blocked.

We returned today to carry out hydro jetting and discovered the blockage was being caused by large lumps of concrete, likely left behind from a relatively recent extension. The drain had been blocked for so long that the manhole had effectively turned into a cesspit, full of stagnant waste and ideal conditions for drain flies to breed.

Using our Picote machine, we broke up and removed the concrete before thoroughly washing the drain down and cleaning the manhole.

The system is now clear and ready for a second CCTV survey to make sure there are no further defects.

By removing the blockage, stagnant waste and organic build-up, we’ve also removed a major breeding and feeding source for the drain flies, which should massively reduce the problem.

🚨 Large Drain Fly Infestation Found in a School 🚨

We were recently called to a school in St Albans, Hertfordshire, where a large number of drain flies had been found.

In this video, I explain the extent of the problem and show the Scanprobe X60 CCTV drain camera that we use to inspect drainage systems and help identify the source of infestations.

Drain flies are often linked to damaged pipework, standing water, or organic build-up within the drainage system. Treating the flies alone will not always solve the underlying issue.

🚨 Emergency wasp call-out today! 🐝

The customer discovered this hidden nest while moving some old rubbish. The wasps had built their home inside a roll of old underlay carpet, making it a nasty surprise.

Rodent Access Issue Resolved 🐀🚫
During a recent investigation into rodent activity, we carried out a CCTV survey and identified a redundant drainage line that was providing potential access into the property.
The line originally served a downstairs toilet that had been removed during previous building works. It appeared that the drain had either been temporarily sealed or the original pipe was just open, creating a route for rodents to travel through the drainage system.
To eliminate the risk, we installed a Permanent Pipe Stop within the redundant pipework. This system uses a resin-impregnated inflatable packer to create a durable, watertight seal that permanently blocks the unused drainage line and prevents future rodent ingress.
By combining CCTV diagnostics with a permanent drainage solution, we were able to identify the source of the problem and provide a long-term fix rather than relying on repeated pest treatments.

🐛 Drain Fly Problem Solved! 🚧
A customer from a large commercial building had been suffering with a persistent drain fly infestation that just wouldn't go away.
A previous CCTV survey carried out by a large national drainage company failed to identify the issue. We carried out our own CCTV survey and identified a suspect defect on a 110mm drainage joint. A smoke test was then completed to confirm our findings.
Once exposed, we discovered the rubber seal within the joint had failed, allowing wastewater to leak into the floor void. This created the perfect breeding environment for drain fly larvae.
The customer was given two options: ✅ No-dig resin patch repair ✅ Excavate and replace the defective joint and leave a access point
They opted for a full repair. This involved breaking out an access point into the floor void, removing the damaged section and installing new pipework.
The result? ✔ Wastewater leak eliminated ✔ Breeding source removed ✔ Drain fly infestation resolved
This is a great example of why simply treating drain flies isn't always enough – finding and fixing the source of the problem is the key to a long-term solution.
