☀️ What happens to solar panels when they eventually come off the roof?

It doesn’t automatically mean landfill.

Commercial solar panels can keep generating electricity for 25–30 years or more, and even when they leave their original installation, some may still have useful life remaining.

Where panels are safe, tested and suitable, responsible reuse may be possible.

When they are no longer suitable for continued use, specialist recycling can recover valuable materials such as glass, aluminium, silicon and copper.

♻️ Reuse where practical. Recycle where reuse is no longer suitable.

Because the environmental story of solar shouldn’t stop when the panels leave the roof.

☀️ How long do commercial solar panels last?

Typically, modern solar panels can keep generating electricity for 25–30 years or longer.

But a commercial solar installation includes more than the panels themselves.

Over its lifetime, a business may need to replace an inverter, upgrade electrical equipment or add battery storage as its energy requirements change.

That doesn’t mean the solar system has reached the end of its life. It’s part of managing a long-term energy asset.

A good solar proposal should take these future costs into account from the start, giving businesses a realistic picture of the investment over its full lifetime.

We’ve taken a closer look at what businesses should expect from panels, inverters, batteries and future upgrades.

**Big roof = big solar system? Not always. ☀️**

One part of commercial solar that businesses don’t always see is what happens **between the building and the electricity network.**

For larger installations, a G99 application is made to the local Distribution Network Operator (DNO).

They assess whether the proposed system can connect to the network and how much electricity it can export.

That can sometimes mean:
→ The system is approved as designed
→ An export limit is applied
→ The design needs to change
→ Network upgrades are required

But an export limit doesn’t necessarily mean fewer panels.

If a business uses a lot of electricity during the day, much of the solar energy may be consumed directly on site rather than exported to the grid.

That’s why commercial solar should be designed around **the roof, the business’s electricity use and the grid**, not simply the maximum number of panels that will fit.

At B Solar Energy, we take care of the DNO application and connection process as part of your project.

If solar generates 100% of your annual electricity use, why do you still receive an electricity bill? ☀️⚡

The answer is timing.

Your solar system might generate surplus electricity on a bright summer afternoon, when your business doesn't need it all. That energy could be exported to the grid.

Later, when solar generation is lower, you may need to buy electricity back.

If you're exporting electricity at around 12p per kWh, but paying around 25p per kWh to import it later, those units don't have the same financial value.

That's why generating the equivalent of 100% of your annual electricity consumption doesn't necessarily mean a £0 electricity bill.

Understanding generation, self-consumption, export and import gives you a much more realistic picture of what commercial solar could actually save your business.

Commercial Solar Case Study: Hilton & Moss

A 514 kW rooftop solar system designed around Hilton & Moss's high daytime energy demand.

The project includes:

⚡ 514 kW system
☀️ 600+ solar panels
💷 £67,000 estimated annual savings
📈 4 years 9 months ROI

And most importantly, it's making a noticeable difference to the business.

💬 “Overall the bills are definitely a lot less and the reduction is key.”

Good commercial solar isn't simply about filling a roof with panels. It's about designing a system around how and when the business actually uses electricity.

Do businesses installing solar always need battery storage?

Not necessarily.

Battery storage can be a fantastic investment, but only when it solves a real problem and delivers a worthwhile return.

For many businesses, most electricity is used during the day, exactly when their solar panels are generating. In those cases, adding a battery may increase the project cost without adding enough extra savings to justify it.

The right decision depends on the data, not assumptions.

That's why we always start by understanding:

📊 How your business uses electricity
☀️ How much solar you'll use immediately
⚡ How much energy is likely to be exported
💷 Whether a battery will genuinely improve the return on investment

Every business is different, so every recommendation should be too.

Our latest blog explains when battery storage makes financial sense, and when it may not.

Summer means greater solar returns, but is your business making the most of the highest generation months?

Longer daylight hours can help commercial solar systems generate more electricity throughout the working day, reducing reliance on grid power and helping businesses get more value from their investment.

Our latest Seasonal Solar Insights looks at practical ways to maximise summer performance, including:

• Matching energy use to solar production
• Monitoring system performance
• Checking for new sources of shade
• Keeping track of generation remotely
