๐ŸŒธ Did you know that one of the most spectacular blossom trees in Britain is almost completely inaccessible to bees? ๐Ÿ

This is Prunus โ€˜Kanzanโ€™, the Japanese Flowering Cherry, currently at peak bloom across Surrey and West Sussex. Those stunning double pink rosette flowers are breathtaking. But those extra petals replace the pollen-bearing stamens, meaning pollinators simply cannot get in.

Beautiful. But worth understanding properly.
If you have one of these in your garden, here is what matters right now ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿ”ธ These trees spread considerably more than most people expect. A mature Kanzan can reach 10 metres tall and equally as wide. In a residential setting that needs managing properly before it becomes a problem

๐Ÿ”ธ Nesting season is fully underway. Any work on this tree requires a qualified arborist nest check before a single branch is touched between now and the end of August

๐Ÿ”ธ Always check for a TPO before any work takes place. Mature ornamental cherries are frequently protected. Work without written consent from your local authority carries an unlimited fine

๐ŸŒธ Did you know that right now, across the UK, Purple Crab Apple trees are at their absolute peak bloom and they will only last another two to three weeks?
This stunning Purple Crab Apple (Malus โ€˜Royaltyโ€™) is in full flower this week and it is one of the most spectacular sights of the entire spring season. That extraordinary deep cerise-magenta blossom is not just beautiful. It is one of natureโ€™s most important moments of the year. ๐ŸŒธ๐Ÿ’œ
Here is why this tree matters far more than most people realise ๐Ÿ‘‡
๐Ÿ”ธ It is a critical early food source for pollinators. Bees, hoverflies and early butterflies emerging from winter rely on blossom like this when food is still genuinely scarce. A mature Crab Apple in full flower is an absolute lifeline for early season wildlife
๐Ÿ”ธ It keeps on giving right through to winter. Those flowers will become deep red crab apples that feed blackbirds, thrushes and fieldfares through the coldest months of the year. One tree working hard for wildlife all year round
๐Ÿ”ธ Urban Crab Apples are under more pressure than they look. Compacted soil, road salt, pavement damage and air pollution all silently stress city trees over time. A professional health check can make the difference between a tree that thrives and one that quietly declines
๐Ÿ”ธ The pruning window for this species is now closed. Any structural work on Malus species should be completed in late winter before blossom begins. Work carried out now risks stressing the tree and significantly reducing the fruit crop that wildlife depends on in autumn
๐Ÿ”ธ Nesting season is fully underway. A tree in full blossom is prime nesting habitat. A qualified arborist nest check is a legal requirement before any work takes place between now and the end of July
Trees like this one are a reminder of just how much the right tree in the right place can do for the world around it. ๐Ÿ’š

๐ŸŒณ See all those shoots growing straight from the trunk? Most people think something is wrong. Here is what they actually mean.
This is a Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) spotted on our rounds in West Sussex this week and those shoots growing from the trunk and main stems are called epicormic shoots, produced here as a direct response to previous hard pruning. They are the treeโ€™s way of pushing out new growth and recovering its energy. ๐ŸŒฟ
Hornbeam is one of Britainโ€™s most underrated native trees and here is what every owner needs to know ๐Ÿ‘‡
๐Ÿ”ธ The wood is extraordinarily hard. In fact the name Hornbeam literally means โ€œhard treeโ€ in Old English. Historically it was used for butchersโ€™ blocks, mill cogs and piano keys because it is so tough. A tree this strong deserves equally strong professional care
๐Ÿ”ธ Epicormic shoots need managing carefully. They are a sign the tree has been through significant pruning stress. Removing them all at once puts the tree straight back into decline. Gradual management by a qualified arborist is the only safe approach
๐Ÿ”ธ Mature Hornbeams are frequently protected by a Tree Preservation Order. Any work without prior written consent from your local authority carries an unlimited fine. Always check before you touch
๐Ÿ”ธ Nesting season is fully underway across West Sussex. Dense epicormic growth like this is perfect nesting habitat. A qualified arborist nest check is legally required before any work takes place between now and the end of July
These trees are tougher than they look. But they still need expert hands to stay healthy. ๐Ÿ’š

๐ŸŒฟ This is what a properly managed formal garden looks like. And right now it needs your attention.

Those striking dark columns are Irish Yew (Taxus baccata โ€˜Fastigiata*โ€™*) and those beautifully sculpted domes in the foreground are Box topiary (Buxus sempervirens). Spotted on our rounds in Surrey this week and honestly, the craftsmanship here is stunning. ๐ŸŒฟ

But spring is a critical moment for both of these plants and here is what every formal garden owner needs to know right now ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿ”ธ Irish Yew needs attention in mid-spring. Those elegant columnar columns naturally want to spread outward as they age. Without professional shaping, individual stems splay outward and the clean architectural form is lost permanently. Mid-spring is the ideal moment to tie and trim before new growth pushes through
๐Ÿ”ธ Box Blight is your biggest threat right now. As temperatures rise and spring humidity increases, Cylindrocladium buxicola spores become active. This devastating fungal disease spreads rapidly in warm damp conditions, turning beautiful topiary brown and bare almost overnight. Early spring inspection and treatment is your best line of defence
๐Ÿ”ธ Box Caterpillar is also active from April. The Box Tree Moth (Cydalima perspectalis) lays its eggs on Box from spring onwards. Caterpillars strip plants from the inside out, often going unnoticed until significant damage is done. A professional inspection now catches it before it takes hold
๐Ÿ”ธ Never use power tools on Box topiary. Blunt or shared blades crush the stems and dramatically increase disease entry risk. The RHS recommends sharp, disinfected hand tools only, cleaned between each plant
Formal garden trees and topiary are an investment. They take years to establish and deserve expert care from people who understand them properly. ๐Ÿ’š

๐Ÿฆ• 200 million years. That is how long this species of tree has been on our planet.

This is a Monkey Puzzle Tree (Araucaria araucana) and we genuinely could not walk past it without stopping. The Monkey Puzzle species was already growing on Earth during the Jurassic period, long before the dinosaurs disappeared. It is not just a tree. It is a living fossil and we think that is one of the most extraordinary things about the natural world. ๐ŸŒฒ

That second photo showing the spiral leaves up close? We were completely mesmerised. Nature really does not need our help sometimes.
If you are lucky enough to have one of these in your garden, here is what you need to know ๐Ÿ‘‡
๐Ÿ”ธ Please do not prune it. This is the number one mistake people make. A Monkey Puzzle cannot regenerate from cut wood. Remove a branch and that space is gone permanently. These trees shape themselves beautifully when left alone. The only exception is careful removal of a genuinely dead branch at the trunk by a qualified arborist
๐Ÿ”ธ It is almost certainly protected. Mature Monkey Puzzle trees are frequently covered by a Tree Preservation Order. Any work without written consent from your local authority carries an unlimited fine. Always check before you do anything
๐Ÿ”ธ It is a globally endangered species. In its native Chile and Argentina, the Monkey Puzzle is classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List. The specimens growing in our gardens and parks here in Surrey and West Sussex are genuinely precious and worth looking after properly
๐Ÿ”ธ It grows very slowly. What looks like a modest sized tree could already be 50 to 100 years old. They deserve patience and proper care

๐ŸŒฒ The most complained about tree in Britain. And spring is the moment it becomes a problem.

The Leyland Cypress (x Cuprocyparis leylandii) is the UKโ€™s fastest growing conifer, capable of putting on up to 90cm of new growth every single year. That is almost a metre taller before summer even arrives. What starts as a neat privacy screen can become a towering giant in just a few seasons. Sound familiar? ๐Ÿ‘€

If you have Leylandii on your property or next door, here is what you need to know right now ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿ”ธ Spring is the first trimming window of the year. Late May to June is ideal for the first cut, just before growth accelerates. Leaving it until autumn means months of unchecked growth that is significantly harder and more expensive to deal with

๐Ÿ”ธ Never cut back into the brown. This is the most common and most costly mistake. Leyland Cypress will NOT regenerate from old brown wood. Once you cut past the green, that section is gone forever. This is a job for qualified hands only

๐Ÿ”ธ The High Hedge Law is real and it applies to you. Under the Anti-Social Behaviour Act 2003, if a neighbourโ€™s evergreen hedge exceeds 2 metres and is affecting your enjoyment of your property, you can make a formal complaint to your local council. If found in breach, the hedge owner can be ordered to reduce it and face a fine for non-compliance

๐Ÿ”ธ Nesting season is underway across Surrey. Dense Leylandii are prime nesting habitat for sparrows, goldcrests and woodpigeons. A qualified arborist nest check is essential before any work takes place between now and the end of July
Whether it is a light shape, a serious reduction or a full removal, our ARB-approved team at Premier Treecare & Conservation Ltd handle Leylandii of every size across Surrey every single week. We know exactly how to manage them safely, legally and without causing permanent damage. ๐Ÿ’š

๐ŸŒฒ Britainโ€™s magnificent native pines. And this one can live for up to 700 years.
This stunning mature Pine tree (Pinus species) spotted in West Sussex this week is genuinely one of the most impressive trees we come across on our rounds. That dramatic spreading crown and tall straight trunk against the blue sky is absolutely breathtaking up close. ๐ŸŒฒ
We love a good tree debate in the comments too โ€” can you identify the exact species? Drop your thoughts below! ๐Ÿ‘‡
If you have a large Pine on your land, here is what you need to know right now ๐Ÿ‘‡
๐Ÿ”ธ A mature Pine can reach 35 metres tall. In a residential setting that makes professional management absolutely essential, not optional. Once these trees outgrow their space they become a serious structural risk to buildings, fences and neighbouring properties
๐Ÿ”ธ Spring is your maintenance window. Late winter to early spring is the recommended time for any light pruning or deadwood removal, before new candle growth begins. Once those new shoots push through, work becomes significantly harder and more stressful for the tree
๐Ÿ”ธ Never remove more than 25% of the canopy in a single year. Over-pruning a mature pine causes severe stress, weakens the root system and opens the tree to fungal disease. This is a job that needs qualified hands
๐Ÿ”ธ Mature specimens in residential areas are frequently protected by a Tree Preservation Order. Any work without prior written consent from your local authority carries an unlimited fine. Always check before you touch
๐Ÿ”ธ Nesting season is fully underway across West Sussex. A mature Pine like this is prime nesting habitat. A qualified arborist nest check is legally required before any work takes place between now and the end of July
Trees like this one are irreplaceable. They deserve expert care from people who truly understand them. ๐Ÿ’š
