Fidèle never needed tricks to become one of the most recognizable dogs in Bruges. For years, the yellow Labrador mostly did something far simpler: he climbed into his favorite window overlooking a Belgian canal, rested his head on a cushion and watched the world float past.
The window belonged to CôtÊ Canal, a bed and breakfast beside Bruges' picturesque Groenerei canal. According to his owner, Caroline Van Langeraert, Fidèle chose the spot himself. As the habit continued, she eventually arranged a table and mattress so he could comfortably spend hours there. Even during winter, she would open the window for him for part of the day.
Then tourists started noticing.
Sightseeing boats regularly passed directly beneath Fidèle's window, and passengers began reaching for their cameras whenever they spotted the sleepy Labrador above them. The routine became so familiar that boat operators would slow down or even switch off their motors long enough to give tourists a chance to photograph him. Fidèle began appearing in vacation pictures from visitors around the world.
His fame eventually traveled far beyond that little window. Fidèle appeared briefly in the 2008 movie In Bruges and was featured in a Godiva television commercial. Tourists sent him fan mail, toys and other gifts.
Yet there is another remarkable chapter to his story. Before becoming a tourist attraction, Fidèle had been the smallest puppy in a litter of 12. His owner later recalled that his previous family had struggled to find him a home because he was smaller and developing differently from his siblings. Caroline went and brought him home herself.
Fidèle died in 2016 at age 12 after becoming ill again. His familiar window was suddenly empty, and condolences reached his family from around the world.
For years, thousands of visitors came to Bruges expecting medieval buildings, canals and beautiful old streets.
Some went home remembering a Labrador asleep on a pillow above the water.
And somehow, that was enough to make him part of the city.
