Should you remove an unused chimney stack?

In most cases, unused chimney stacks deteriorate rapidly—and the visible signs rarely show the full extent of the issue.

Key risks include:

⚠️ Mortar degradation → loss of structural integrity.
⚠️ Hygroscopic salts → moisture retention and penetrating damp.
⚠️ Vegetation growth → accelerated decay and water ingress.
⚠️ Freeze–thaw cycles → expansion damage to brickwork

Typical maintenance requirements:

Repointing, brickwork repairs, lead flashings (back gutter, apron, step/soaker), flaunching, and damp remediation.

Why removal is often recommended:
