A long Bank Holiday weekend lasts 72 hours. The next generation of clean energy storage could hold electricity for more than 100.

The Government has launched a new £28 million challenge to develop technologies capable of storing clean electricity for over 100 hours, helping the UK make better use of renewable energy and reduce its reliance on gas when solar and wind generation are lower.

These large-scale technologies are very different from the batteries installed in homes and businesses, but the principle is the same: capture clean energy when it is available and save it for when it is needed.

After all, solar panels don’t take Bank Holiday Monday off. With battery storage, more of the electricity they generate can be kept for later too.

July was a record-breaking month for solar power in Great Britain.

Figures from the National Energy System Operator show that solar supplied 14.4% of all electricity generated during the month, beating the previous record of 12.4%, set only in May.

Altogether, solar generated 3.2 terawatt hours of electricity during July.

It is another sign of the increasingly important role solar is playing in Britain’s energy mix, with installations on homes, businesses and other sites all contributing to the clean electricity being generated around the country.

Solar and battery storage are having a record-breaking year in the UK.

New figures from MCS show that 210,000 certified renewable installations were completed between January and June 2026, 17% more than the previous record start to a year.

Solar led the way with 148,531 certified installations, while battery storage installations almost doubled to 36,000. In fact, 92% of those batteries were installed at properties with solar panels.

That combination makes a lot of sense. Solar panels generate electricity during daylight hours, while battery storage allows more of that energy to be saved and used when it is needed.

Did the eclipse leave its mark on your solar panels?

Yesterday evening’s partial solar eclipse covered more than 90% of the Sun across the UK, giving solar panel owners a rare opportunity to see an eclipse reflected in their generation data.

If you have a solar monitoring app, take a look at your graph between approximately 6.15pm and 8pm. Can you spot an unusual dip as the Moon passed in front of the Sun?

It was also a neat demonstration of why solar panels and battery storage work so well together. Energy generated earlier in the day can be stored and used when sunlight falls, whether that is caused by cloud, nightfall or, occasionally, the Moon getting in the way.
