⚡ Does a failed insulation test during a fuse box replacement mean your home needs rewiring?

Not necessarily. A low reading needs investigating before deciding on repairs. Connected equipment, moisture or a local wiring defect can affect the result — the cause should be confirmed first.

Our latest blog explains what happens next, whether unaffected circuits can safely have power restored, and what to ask before agreeing to additional work.

At Solid Electrics, we help homeowners across Southampton and the surrounding areas with:

✅ Fuse box and consumer unit replacements
✅ Electrical fault finding
✅ Electrical Installation Condition Reports (EICRs)

Sometimes a “small electrical job” becomes a little more challenging when the lights are directly above a staircase!

The customer contacted me because the LED downlights had started flickering and needed to be repaired.

These weren’t downlights with replaceable bulbs. They were integrated LED fittings, meaning the LED and driver are built into one unit — so when they fail, the complete downlight normally needs replacing.

Access was the tricky part.

For jobs like this I use my multi-position ladder, which can be adjusted for different heights on a staircase. It gave me safe and stable access to the lights without damaging the walls, stairs or surrounding area.

💡 Faulty integrated downlights removed
💡 New downlights fitted
🪜 Safe access over the table
✅ Tested and working
🏠 Job completed neatly with a happy customer

Small jobs still deserve the right tools and the same attention to safety and finish as larger electrical projects.

Floodlight & Security Camera Installation ⚡📷

A recent job at a new-build semi-detached house in North Baddesley, installing an outdoor and security camera.

For this installation, I took the new supply from the garage consumer unit, providing a neat and practical power source for the external equipment.

The job included:

⚡ New electrical supply from the garage consumer unit
💡 Outdoor floodlight installation
📷 Security camera installation
🏠 Neat installation on a modern new-build property
✅ Testing on completion

Outdoor and cameras are a simple way to improve both visibility and security around your home, especially around driveways, garages and side access areas.

Bathroom fan running, but the room still feels damp after a shower? 🚿

A spinning fan does not always mean it’s extracting air effectively. Restricted ducting, poor airflow into the room or a control problem could be contributing — so a more powerful replacement isn’t automatically the answer.

We help homeowners across Southampton and surrounding areas with:

✅ Bathroom and kitchen extractor fan replacements
✅ Electrical fault finding
✅ PIV ventilation systems where suitable

Our latest blog explains what needs checking before deciding whether to repair or replace your fan:

Sometimes an electrical fault is much simpler than you expect.

On this job, the circuit breaker had tripped and wouldn’t reset properly.

The cause? A blown old-style tungsten light bulb.

When the filament in this type of lamp fails, it can sometimes arc and create enough fault current to trip the circuit breaker.

When I’m fault finding lighting circuits, some of the first places I check are older light fittings and outdoor lighting — especially after heavy rain. Water getting into outside lights, damaged cables or poor connections inside junction boxes are all common causes of tripping.

But this time, the fix was simple: remove the faulty bulb, fit a new one, test the circuit — job done. ✅

Not every electrical fault needs a major repair.

We also take care of small electrical jobs across Southampton and surrounding areas — from faulty lights and switches to sockets, outdoor lighting and fault finding.

Does an old fuse box automatically need replacing? 🤔

Not necessarily. Its condition, the protection it provides and any electrical work you’re planning all matter. Repeated tripping needs investigating — replacing the fuse box won’t fix a damaged cable elsewhere in your home.

We help homeowners across Southampton, including Bitterne and Shirley, with:

✅ Fusebox and consumer unit upgrades
✅ Electrical fault finding
✅ EICRs and electrical safety checks

Our latest blog explains the warning signs and what to consider before booking a replacement:

Installing a modern storage heater for a couple in a mid-terrace house in Lordshill, Southampton.

In this video I show how I mounted the storage heater and explain why this type of heater requires two electrical supplies:

⚡ Off-peak supply – charges the internal heat storage during cheaper overnight electricity periods.
⚡ 24-hour / peak supply – powers the controls, fan and additional heating functions when required.

Modern storage heaters can be a good option for homes without gas heating, especially when used with the correct off-peak electricity tariff.

This installation included mounting the heater, connecting the electrical supplies, testing and commissioning the unit ready for the customer to use.

If you need a storage heater installed, replaced or checked in Southampton or surrounding areas, contact Solid Electrics.

A customer in Wi******er had poor Wi-Fi coverage upstairs and had been relying on range extenders.

To get a reliable internet connection into one of the rooms, around 60 metres of network cable had previously been run around the house — across floors, through windows and wherever it could be routed.

After taking a closer look, I found that the property already had a wired data installation.

The original data/comms cabinet had previously been removed, leaving network cables, HDMI cables, telephone wiring, TV aerial cables and parts of the audio system disconnected, cut or simply left loose inside the cupboard.

I carried out basic testing of the existing network cabling using a cable tester and found that the connection to the room the customer needed was still intact.

That meant we could use the cable already installed within the property instead of continuing to rely on the temporary 60m cable running around the house.

This wasn’t commercial data certification — it was practical testing to confirm the cable was continuous, the connections were correct and the existing wiring could be reused.

The next stage will be to:

• Install a compact data/comms cabinet
• Identify and reconnect the remaining network cables
• Restore wired internet connections to more rooms
• Tidy and organise the existing cabling
• Investigate reconnecting the existing audio system
• Reduce the need for Wi-Fi range extenders

Once completed, the customer will be able to make much better use of the existing network points around the property and connect Wi-Fi access points or other network equipment exactly where needed.

Sometimes a bit of investigation and testing can save running completely new cables through a finished house.

I also completed several small electrical jobs during the visit, including replacement outdoor lighting and USB socket outlets. I’ll show more of that work in another video.
