Dalmeny Joinery has been serving Dalmeny, South Queensferry and beyond for several generations and is now run by Richard and Mhairi Leather. We are available for all types of joinery work from small domestic jobs to bespoke items manufactured for you in our own workshops. Richard is usually found in the workshop and Mhairi runs the office and both will be happy to help either over the phone or in person by calling at our premises based in the Hopetoun Estate.

A common phrase in manufacturing is ‘from the back of a fag packet’ maybe not as relevant as it used to be and perhaps I’m showing my age! but it refers to how a project often starts. A perfect example is a recently completed job which started as ropey notes on a photo, developed into a formal sketch and finally installation. The end result is a happy customer and a fantastic looking piece of furniture.

Timeless Skills in a Modern World

It is easy to assume that machines have taken over everything, but true quality still relies on the human hand. When you run your fingers along a perfectly smooth table edge or open a cabinet that fits just right, you are feeling the result of traditional joinery techniques that haven’t changed in centuries.

We still rely on methods like mortise and tenon joints because they offer strength that mass-produced screws and glue simply cannot match. Hand-planing timber allows us to follow the natural grain of the wood, keeping its character alive rather than stripping it away. It is about honouring the material, not just manufacturing a product.
