We were asked to support another community project in the grounds of Balsall Heath City Farm which is run by St Paul's Community Trust. We last visited the farm in 2019 to help construct areas that were to be used by community groups, which were not wheel chair accessible or easy to maintain.

We returned this year, just before the Covid-19 lockdown, to work alongside the Princes Trust TEAM programme to create additional raised beds for the community grow project and also install some picnic benches, which students had to construct from scratch with a delivey of timber.

We worked in partnership with Stortford Interiors, who are one of our subcontractors in the Midlands, to link the students to potential job opportunities on site at 103 Colmore Row in stalling partitions and the group received a donation of PPE from Stortfords, which included hi viz vests and safety boots.

BAM volunteers worked alongside the group, including our BIM manager, who really enjoyed teh challenge of trying to build four raised beds in 3 days, complete with topsoil and edgings.

We recently completed our latest BCU bid module challenge with final year construction management and quantity surveying students based on our 103 Colmore Row project in Birmingham.

Students are given a presentation by our Education Coordinator on the project before students divide themselves up into teams to tender for the project.

We have introduced new elements into the challenge over the last two years, to include a number of Social Value elements as well as the requirement to produce a 4D model using Syncro.

Students are given a 'mid tender review' where there is a pass/fail element, before a panel of BAM juges, before being allowed to progress to final tender submission, again in front of a panel of BAM judges.

This years winning group were superb, potentially down to the fact that we have been working with some of these students for 3 years and were first introduced to the students during the freshers week competition, at West Midlands Safari Park, which we also support.

Our level 4 apprentices are featuring in a range of online articles and video's which is testament to their skills of being able to communicate in ways that they are potentially unfamiliar with.

Our latest apprentice to feature is our Level 4 Building Services Apprentice, who is working on site at 103 Colmore Row who featured in the recent Procure Partnerships website on young people in construction.

Please feel free to click on the link below to read about our apprentices route into construction, starting at Level 3.

Following on the theme of engaging apprentices here in the Midlands, we were approached by one of our partner Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing training providors, JTL, based in Aston in Birmingham to help with a video on Traineeships.

Our level 4 site management apprentice was on hand, along with the Midlands Education Coordinator, to help explain why traineeships are important to employers during a filming session on site at Lindsworth SEN school in Birmingham.

Please feel free to click the link below to see the final film:

As part of National Apprentice Week 2020, our Midlands Apprentices were interviewed live on air by BBC News about their experiences of working on our sites. They were excellent ambassadors for construction apprenticeships and came over brilliantly.

Huge thanks to the site team at 103 Colmore Row, as the filming schedule was rather hectic, with a series of live broadcasts being filmed every hour with other guest speakers including our own Regional Director being interviewed on our viewing platform.

Our Midlands apprentices and trainees were set a challenge to enhance the lives of the communities we work with across the Midlands.

One of the events that they supported was the event at Millennium Point in Birmimgham where six schools attended a day long STEM, (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths), themed activity day.

One of the schools that attended was known to BAM as we built Nishkam High School a couple of years ago and their students were one of the first groups to solve the 'Impossapuzzle' challenge and build one of the longest unsupported bridges, using the least amount of building materials.

The feedback from the event run by the Ahead Partnersip through the Millennium Point Trust was great with nearly 150 staff and students taking part in our workshops.

Two students who were introduced to our supply chain through our Work Placement Programme on our Two Chamberlain Square project in Birmingham have secured apprenticeships and were spotted on site at 103 Colmore Row this week.

One of the students was studying Carpentry at South and City College and the other student was part of a 12 week Princes Trust TEAM programme and is being trained in fire protection.

We are fortunate to work with some really forward thinking subcontrcators who have consistently supported our Work Placement Programme. Great social distancing lads.

We ran our Work Placement Programme on 103 Colmore Row with our bricklaying subcontractor just before the Covid-19 pandemic and placed two South and City College students on site, whilst they completed their college work 3 days a week.

The placement was a success with both students securing employment with our subcontractor. As a result, both of the students were awarded 'Work placment student of the year' at the Sir Doug Ellis OBE South and City College Apprenticeship awards. A huge well done to both students.

We have continued to work across the Midlands with a range of stakeholders to create raised beds that enable communities to grow their own fresh fruit and vegetables. Last year we created four raised beds in the grounds of a church in Birmingham, two raised beds in the grounds of a farm in Birmingham, eight raised beds in the grounds of a BAM operated school near Birmingham and two raised beds in the grounds of another school being constructed by our site team near Birmingham. We also constructed twelve raised beds in the grounds of a hospital in Startford and a raised bed to promote the fundraising efforts of our linked charity in the grounds of a conference centre in Stratford. In addition to this, our site team in Rugby worked with volunteers from across the UK to construct six raised benches in the grounds of a primary school next to our Rugby Free School site and we installed four more benches in the grounds of the school we are constructing in Birmingham.

Our team at the Rugby Secondary Free School have donated £1000 to local charity, Rugby Autism Network. Created in 2009 by a local parent, they aim to support parents and help enable families to enjoy more quality time together. Currently supporting over 200 associate members and over 500 parents through its network. The cheque was handed over by ‘Santa’ with Project Manager Brian Scott and some of our site team, Brian said: “We have undertaken activities throughout the year to help raise money for a variety of charities here at the school. Autism has a special significance for us, because next door to this new building is Quest Academy, which educates a lot of young people with autism.”

Over 50 volunteers from the community and surrounding businesses in Stratford-on-Avon helped turn the grounds of Stratford Hospital into a Well-being garden which will be used to grow fruit and vegetables for the hospital cafe. The Forest of Hearts charity approached staff from the Midlands to help turn their vision into reality and our Midlands Level 4 apprentices worked with staff from our offices in Shirley and Wellingborough to set out and create twelve raised beds. The weather tried its best to hold us back, but despite the rain, we were able to deliver the project on time and within budget.

The work we undertake with the Princes Trust TEAM programme is extremely powerful and really does Transform Lives. The Balsall Heath City Farm Project in partnership with EH Smths Charitable Trust and St Pauls Community Trust were shortlisted and won the West Midlands Community Impact Award for 2019. The TEAM have also got through to the Princes Trust National awards in 2020 and again, we wish the TEAM good Luck!
