A customer has just sent me the attached photo of their gas fire, asking whether I can service it. Above the fire, in the top left hand corner, is a black stain.

If you should see anything like this around any of your gas appliances, please stop using them immediately. Black stains like this are a possible sign of what gas engineers call spillage - fumes (including carbon monoxide) that should be going up the chimney/flue are potentially entering the room.

Carbon monoxide is colourless, odourless, tasteless and deadly.

If you see anything like what’s in the attached photo around any of your gas appliances, or notice anything else unusual (noises, smells, etc) please get the appliance checked out.

Below is an article from Gas Safe about fires and potential problems with them, including a reference to the black staining:

I’m more than happy to do it, or there are other really good engineers locally as well.

Stay safe.

A big thank you to Neville at Top Gunn Cycles for a prompt repair to my mountain bike at a very reasonable price. Neville has looked after my bike for several years and I’ve always been very happy with what he’s done.

In the last week I have attended two jobs where dangerous gas leaks and other faults have been left on appliances.

The first one was a boiler that had been installed by a builder. The second was a gas pipe to a hob that had been extended by a kitchen fitter. If a builder, kitchen fitter or anyone else claims to be qualified to do gas work for you PLEASE ask to see their Gas Safe card or look up their registration number online.

Fortunately nobody was hurt (or worse) in either of these cases but this was certainly more down to luck than judgement. No competent engineer would leave a gas leak on an appliance like this as they would have the equipment and training to test for leaks before they left the premises.

The customers of these two dodgy tradesmen may have believed they were saving a few quid by getting the builder and kitchen fitter to do the gas work - they were mistaken as they’re now having to pay for the work to be done again. Even with the extra expense, they’re fortunate that they (and their neighbours) weren’t injured or killed.

PLEASE get your gas work done by somebody who is qualified and registered.

Why You Should Get Your Fire Serviced.

Obviously none of us are using our gas fires at the moment but I serviced one today and found this behind it - lots of debris from the chimney and the blanked out bit is a very dead pigeon.

When I tested the chimney I found it was blocked - probably by this poor creature’s nest. The customer hasn’t used the fire for all long time and is only having it serviced because he’s selling the house. I told him it was a very good job he hadn’t used It as carbon monoxide would have poured into the room and quite possibly put him in hospital or killed him.

You can’t see, taste or smell carbon monoxide. PLEASE get your appliances checked regularly. I’ll do any appliance for £60.

This is a really short video from a very well respected gas engineer demonstrating the importance of getting your boiler serviced every year.

The fault he’s identified is commonplace and it’s very important it’s corrected promptly. If you haven’t had your boiler serviced in the last twelve months please do so.

Whilst attending to a routine boiler job earlier this week I had to pull out a cooker to get access to the boiler I needed to look at.

Behind the cooker I discovered the hose had been connected the wrong way around and an isolation valve installed on the gas pipe was attached with fittings meant only for use on water. I’ve now put it right - fortunately before anything untoward happened.

There is no way that a competent, qualified gas engineer had installed the appliance - the customer was unaware there was a problem with what had been done. All registered gas engineers should carry a Gas Safe card. You’re perfectly within your rights to ask to see it - please do so. Nobody legit will object to the request. If they don’t have it with them, ask for their registration number and you can check them online at www.gassaferegister.co.uk - you can see their photo too. If they can’t or won’t give you their registration number, find somebody else!

Gas Safe Register replaced the CORGI registration in 2009. It is the official list of gas engineers who are qualified to work legally on gas appliances.
