You might have ignored the fence all summer, but autumn has a way of moving it back up the to-do list.

Maybe it’s already looking tired, there’s a section you’ve been meaning to repair, or you know it probably won’t cope well with another season of wet and windy weather. And if privacy or security has been bothering you, that’s another job that’s much nicer to have sorted before winter.

The rain is back, temperatures have dropped… and for your lawn, that’s not necessarily bad news! 🌱

After a hot, dry summer, September is when we start looking at lawns properly again.

Patchy areas, thin grass, bare spots and tired-looking lawns can all become much more obvious after summer. But the cooler, wetter conditions also give us a much better opportunity to work on recovery.

Depending on the condition of your lawn, renovation could include:

✅ Repairing bare and damaged areas
✅ Levelling uneven ground
✅ Improving the soil and preparing the surface
✅ Reseeding where appropriate
✅ Replacing badly damaged lawns with fresh turf

And if the lawn has reached the point where patch repairs simply won’t give you the result you want, we can take it back, prepare the ground properly and start again.

Two of the most underrated parts of a garden? Boundaries and levels.

On this recent project in Stoke Poges, we installed new fencing and built sleeper beds to give the space a much stronger framework.

The fencing does the obvious job of improving privacy and defining the garden, but the sleeper beds are just as important. They create clear planting zones, help organise changes in level and stop borders from gradually spilling into the rest of the garden.

Done properly, these elements make everything else easier afterwards — planting is more controlled, maintenance is simpler, and the garden has a much clearer layout.

It’s not the flashy part of landscaping, but it’s often the part that makes the whole space work.

Can’t quite picture what your garden could look like once it’s all sorted?

That’s one of the biggest things that stops people from starting!

When a garden is overgrown, unstructured or simply hasn’t been touched for a while, it can be hard to see past what’s there now — and even harder to know where to begin.

That was exactly the case with this recent transformation.

We worked with the client throughout the project, kept them updated, listened to what they wanted from the space and turned an unkept garden into something clean, practical and enjoyable.

Why are raised sleeper beds such a popular addition to gardens?

Because they do a lot more than simply frame your plants!

From the projects pictured here, you can see how sleeper beds can:

👉 Add structure to large or awkward spaces
👉 Make borders feel neater and more intentional
👉 Give plants their own dedicated growing zone
👉 Help separate planting from patios, lawns and pathways

Has the heatwave turned your lawn brown? Don’t panic just yet!

In prolonged hot, dry weather, established lawns often go dormant. They may look scorched, patchy or completely brown, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they need replacing. In many cases, they’ll start to recover once cooler, wetter weather returns.

A few things you can do now:

🌿 Raise your mower height and avoid cutting the grass too short. Close mowing puts extra stress on drought-hit lawns.

💧 Don’t keep lightly watering an established lawn every day. If local restrictions allow watering, prioritise new turf and newly planted areas instead. Always check your water company’s current rules first.

👣 Give badly scorched areas a break from heavy foot traffic while the grass is stressed.

Then think about recovery. Early autumn is an ideal time to repair thin or damaged lawns, whether that means reseeding, repairing patches or relaying turf where the lawn is beyond recovery.

Who says you need a huge garden to do something fun with it? ⛳🌿

This compact outdoor space in 📍Iver could easily have been left as a narrow, awkward strip.

Instead, we turned it into a bespoke putting green using artificial grass, making the area feel purposeful, playful and far more enjoyable to use.

It’s a great example of how creative landscaping can make even a small garden work harder.
