Not all pre-heating is the same

When someone says, “We need a heater”, the next question is
What exactly are you trying to heat?

At Preheat Engineering, we manufacture different heating solutions because the location and method of applying heat matter.

Engine coolant – heating and circulating coolant to pre-condition an engine.
Fuel tanks – applying heat where it is needed to help prevent fuel from waxing or gelling.
Oil sumps and tanks – using direct heating where warming the oil itself is the priority.
AdBlue/DEF – requiring a heating solution designed specifically for the application and the properties of the fluid.

The right solution isn't necessarily the heater that produces the most heat.
It’s the one that delivers the right amount of heat, in the right place, in the right way.

The extreme temperatures we’ve experienced this summer have been difficult to ignore.
With repeated heatwaves, prolonged dry conditions and temperatures reaching 38.1°C in the UK, wildfires have become a very real and devastating consequence.
This year we’ve seen homes destroyed, communities evacuated and firefighters working in exceptionally challenging conditions. Across England and Wales, wildfire numbers have already surpassed previous records.

And as summers become hotter and drier, fire protection and emergency preparedness become increasingly important.
For sites that rely on fire pump systems, the pump needs to be ready to perform when it is needed.

Our Peregrine Fire Pump Coolant Heaters & Engine Kits have been specifically designed for fire pump applications, helping maintain the correct engine coolant temperature and prevent false alarms on the fire pump control panel.
Our 230V heaters can also be supplied as complete engine fitting kits, including relevant mountings, fittings, hose and anti-vibration components.

A useful lesson we’ve learned about installing engine heaters

At a recent event, we were discussing engine heater installation with an experienced engineer, and one important point came up that’s worth sharing.

When a new engine heater is installed, the engine should be run to operating temperature before the heater is energised for the first time.

Running the engine circulates coolant through the system and helps purge any air introduced during installation.

Air pockets can restrict coolant flow through the heater and pipework. If the heater is energised without adequate coolant flow, the heating element can become exposed to air, potentially causing it to overheat and fail prematurely.

Run the engine - circulate the coolant - purge the air - check the system - then energise the heater.

A small but important step that can help protect the heater and ensure it operates correctly.

A tank heater is much more than just a heating element.

Its job is to maintain the fuel at the correct temperature so it flows efficiently through the fuel system and atomises correctly through the engine’s injector misting jets.

Cold or gelling diesel can restrict fuel flow and potentially clog filters, fuel lines and injector jets. This can starve the engine of fuel, leading to stalling, poor efficiency and increased NOx emissions.

At Preheat Engineering, our PEREGRINE fuel tank heaters are manufactured from brass for excellent thermal conductivity. The tubes housing the heating elements are electro nickel plated to protect the brass from oxidation and corrosion and help prevent fuel degradation.

The nickel plating also helps provide an even distribution of heat, reducing localised hot spots and helping maintain consistent fuel temperature without degrading the fuel.

Nickel is hard and highly wear resistant, adding durability to the heater and helping it withstand demanding operating conditions over a long service life.

Combined with accurate thermostatic control, the result is efficient, controlled heating that helps maintain fuel quality and supports reliable engine performance.

Sometimes, it’s the engineering you can’t see that makes the biggest difference.

How do you choose the correct heater for your engine?

Selecting the right engine coolant heater is one of the most important decisions when protecting an engine from cold starts and ensuring it is ready to perform when required.
With a range of heater outputs and models available, it can be difficult to know which solution is best. Choosing a heater that is too small may not provide sufficient heat to maintain the engine at its optimum operating temperature, particularly in colder climates. Equally, selecting a heater with more output than your application requires can lead to unnecessary energy consumption and place additional stress on cooling system components over time.

To recommend the most suitable heater, we consider far more than just engine size. Our technical team will assess a number of factors, including:
• Engine capacity and coolant volume.�• The type of application, whether it's standby, prime power or continuous operation.�• The lowest ambient temperatures the engine is likely to experience.�• Installation location, including exposure to wind or harsh environmental conditions.�• Whether a thermosiphon or pumped circulation heating system is the most suitable solution.�• Any additional heating requirements, such as oil, fuel or DEF (AdBlue®) heating.

You wouldn’t start cooking in a cold oven… so why start an engine cold?

Most of us preheat an oven before cooking because it reaches the correct temperature more quickly and works more efficiently.

The same principle applies to an engine.

Preheat Engineering’s PEREGRINE engine coolant heaters use thermosiphon heating technology to warm the engine before start-up.

So, how does it work without a pump?

It’s all down to physics.

As the heating element warms the coolant, the hot coolant becomes lighter and rises through the engine. Cooler, denser coolant sinks back to the heater, where it is heated again.

This natural circulation, known as thermosiphon heating, continuously warms the engine without the need for a pump. Once the coolant reaches the set temperature, the built in thermostat switches the heater off and automatically switches it back on when needed to maintain the optimum temperature.

The result is -
Easier engine starting
Reduced wear on the starter motor and battery
Improved oil flow from start-up
Lower fuel consumption and emissions
Greater reliability, especially in colder conditions
