⚡ EV Charger Installation in Swineshead, Boston

This customer contacted SKU Electrical after the standard EV charger installation offered through their vehicle supplier wasn’t suitable for the property.

The cable route and groundwork made the job more involved than a straightforward installation, and some of the alternatives they had explored were becoming expensive.

Following a recommendation from one of our existing customers, they asked us to take a look.

Rather than dismissing the job as too complicated, we surveyed the property and designed a practical solution which included:

• A dedicated EV charging supply

🏠 Buying a Property? Make Sure the Electrics Are Properly Checked

We recently carried out a full Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) for a client who had purchased a property in Sleaford.

Because the property was empty, it was an ideal time to carry out a thorough inspection and testing of the electrical installation before the new owner moved in.

During the EICR, we identified a number of issues, including:

• No main protective bonding to the gas installation
• Exposed live conductors within an external storage area

We recently attended a property in Navenby after the new owner asked SKU Electrical to carry out a full Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR).

Following the inspection and testing, we provided the customer with a clear report outlining the condition of the electrical installation, along with recommendations for the remedial work required.

☀️ Do You Know What’s Behind Your Solar & Battery Installation?

We recently attended a property in Sleaford to investigate an unrelated EV charger fault. While carrying out the work, we also noticed a relatively new solar PV and battery system that had been installed around a year ago.

The customer had understandably assumed everything had been designed and installed as it should be — and, like most homeowners, had no reason to know what isolation, protection, equipment suitability or installation requirements they should be looking for.

That responsibility sits with the installer.

During our assessment, we identified concerns that warranted further investigation, including:

• The arrangements for DC isolation
• Whether the outdoor location and environment had been adequately considered for the equipment installed

Solar and battery installations need to be designed as complete electrical systems.

That includes considering how equipment can be safely isolated for servicing, maintenance or an emergency, taking into account the equipment itself and the manufacturer’s requirements.

Where inverters and batteries are installed outdoors, the installer also needs to consider whether the equipment is suitable for the location, the manufacturer’s installation requirements, required clearances and long-term exposure to the weather.

The important point is this:

Customers shouldn’t be expected to know all of this.

When you pay for a professionally installed solar and battery system, you are relying on the installer to design it properly, install the appropriate protection and isolation, commission it correctly and explain the system at handover.

A solar installation isn’t simply panels + inverter + battery.

The design and quality of the electrical installation behind the equipment matter just as much.

⚡ EV Charging, Solar & Battery Storage – Working Together

Another installation completed for one of our returning customers — and this is now the third time they’ve chosen SKU Electrical to carry out work at their property.

⚡ What Looked Like an EV Charger Fault Turned Out to Be a Serious Electrical Failure

We attended a property in Sleaford after the customer contacted us because their EV charger had suddenly stopped working.

The charger had only been installed around a year ago, so initially it looked as though the issue might simply be with the charger or its protective device.

Once we started investigating, however, we found something much more serious.

The incoming neutral meter tail had developed a loose connection. Over time, this had been arcing and generating significant heat, causing severe overheating and burning around the main switch and extensive damage inside the consumer unit.

The customer had noticed a burning smell, but because the consumer unit was located externally, the damage had been developing largely out of sight.

It was ultimately the EV charger failing that brought the problem to attention.

This is a good example of why loose electrical connections should never be underestimated. A circuit does not necessarily need to be overloaded for serious heat damage to occur — a poor termination can create resistance, arcing and progressively worse overheating.

Once the fault had been identified, the damaged consumer unit was removed and replaced with a new unit, restoring a safe and reliable supply.

What initially appeared to be an EV charger fault turned out to be a much more significant problem within the electrical installation.

If you notice:

• A burning smell near electrical equipment
• Discolouration or signs of heat
• Circuits or EV chargers suddenly stopping
• Repeated tripping
• Unusual electrical behaviour

it is worth having the installation properly investigated rather than simply resetting the protective device.

🏡 Buying or Selling a Property? Make Sure the Electrics Are Ready Too ⚡

We recently attended this property in Grantham after the seller asked SKU Electrical to carry out a full Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) before the new owners moved in.

An EICR is a thorough inspection and test of the electrical installation, designed to identify defects, deterioration and safety issues that may need attention.

Following the inspection, the customer chose to have the recommended remedial work completed so the electrical installation was ready for handover.

The work included:

⚡ Electrical Fault After a Water Leak?

We attended this property within 24 hours after the customer experienced a water leak from the bathroom above, followed by loss of power to the affected electrical circuits.

Rather than simply resetting breakers and hoping the problem had gone away, we carried out proper fault finding and dead testing to identify exactly where the issue was coming from.

The fault was traced to water ingress affecting the ceiling lighting circuit.

Once identified, we carried out the necessary remedial work, made the affected circuit safe and restored power to the property.

While on site, we also identified a number of areas where the wider electrical installation could be improved and provided the customer with recommendations for future upgrades.

Electrical faults are not always obvious, and water ingress can affect wiring and accessories in areas that may not be immediately visible.

This customer contacted SKU Electrical after purchasing a property in Newark and starting a full renovation.

Before the refurbishment progressed too far, we carried out a thorough Electrical Installation Condition Report to assess the condition and safety of the existing electrical installation.

Following the inspection, we completed a number of upgrades and remedial works, including:

• Relocating the consumer unit from its original low-level position, where it was more vulnerable to accidental damage
• Upgrading the existing consumer unit to a modern FuseBox RCBO board with surge protection
• Replacing and upgrading electrical accessories throughout the property
