Another lovely single storey rear extension recently completed in Shrewsbury ✨

This traditional suburban house originally had a dark dining room and a narrow galley kitchen that no longer worked for modern living. By extending and opening up the rear of the property, we’ve created a bright, light-filled kitchen and dining space with a separate utility and WC, transforming the flow of the home and creating a much stronger connection to the beautiful established rear garden.

The extension is centred around a stunning roof lantern and large sliding doors, bringing natural light deep into the property and allowing the garden to become part of the everyday living experience.

Good residential design isn’t always about creating something huge or dramatic, often it’s about carefully resolving light, flow and functionality to create a home that feels calm, effortless and enjoyable to spend time in.

House Gecko Architectural provided the design, planning and building regulations packages for the project.

Good architecture is not always about creating a huge visual statement. Sometimes the real success lies in designing something so sensitively it feels as though it has always belonged there.

This greenhouse side extension within the Ironbridge Gorge AONB was carefully designed to remain subservient to the original house and almost disappear into the existing architecture - an approach that successfully secured planning approval within this highly sensitive setting.

A lovely review from the client afterwards: "It was pot-luck that got me in touch with House Gecko... I have nothing but praise for them: good humoured, imaginative and thorough..."

Projects like this are a reminder that thoughtful architecture is as much about respecting what already exists as it is about creating something new.

A rear extension nearing completion on site in rural Shropshire.

This project was designed to replace an existing conservatory and significantly enlarge the dining and living spaces, creating a much stronger connection between the house, garden and surrounding countryside views.

The new extension introduces layered roof forms, vaulted ceilings and large glazed openings that flood the interior with natural light whilst still sitting comfortably alongside the original traditional country house.

One of our favourite aspects of the project is how naturally the new dining space now opens out towards the garden, transforming what was previously a smaller enclosed conservatory into a far more generous, light-filled and architectural living environment.

The carefully balanced proportions, traditional materials and contemporary glazing help the extension feel both elegant and timeless whilst enhancing the character of the original property.

A really exciting project to see coming together on site.

Interior photos to follow soon.

A Transformation in progress in Shrewsbury.

This has been one of those projects where thoughtful design has completely changed the direction of a home.

The clients originally approached House Gecko after a very disappointing experience elsewhere, having already invested heavily in a scheme that simply wasn’t working — both architecturally and from a planning perspective.

We went right back to first principles and completely reimagined the project.

The final design combines:
• a dramatic rear extension with vaulted glazing and layered roof forms
• a loft conversion with a striking feature window framing extensive countryside views
• beautifully connected open-plan living spaces
• and a much stronger relationship between the house and garden

The challenge was creating a large amount of additional accommodation whilst carefully balancing the proportions and massing against the existing house to achieve planning approval.

By carefully sculpting the roof forms and balancing traditional materials with contemporary glazing, the rear elevation now feels dynamic, elegant and full of light whilst still sitting naturally alongside the original house.

We also supported the project through:
✓ Planning approval
✓ Building Regulations
✓ Contractor procurement

Now nearing completion on site and looking fantastic.

We can’t wait to photograph the finished interiors once the final touches are complete.

Following on from our earlier post this week, this is an interior view of a new lounge in the converted barn in Hadnall, the glass extension links the original barn to the later-addition garage, before the extension you had to walk outside in all weathers. Illustrating how a modest glass extension can completely transform family-living and create stunning, additional useable space.

One of my favourite recently completed projects here in Hadnall, an extension and garage conversion to a converted barn. Extensions to barn conversions are notoriously difficult to gain planning permission for, so this was a really satisfying project to see through and watch come to life.
