A new face at House Gecko

You may have spotted someone new joining me on measured surveys recently…
This is Stan, House Gecko’s Trainee CAD Technician & Survey Assistant, and yes, he also happens to be my son!

Stan is currently studying Design and Development for Engineering and Manufacturing at college and has been working alongside me, learning how to assist with measured building surveys and the preparation of existing CAD drawings back in the office.

House Gecko has always been a small, local and independent business, so having Stan become part of it feels special.

As his skills develop, he’ll continue to assist me with the measured survey and existing-drawing side of projects, gaining valuable real-world experience alongside his studies and giving me more time to focus on design, problem-solving and working directly with clients.

He’s already proving to be a very useful addition to House Gecko, so you’ll probably be seeing a little more of him on site from now on.

How is it Wednesday already? Another busy week for us at House Gecko, we are:
• Redesigning a large bungalow for modern family living, with an extension, replacement dormers and improved flow throughout the existing space.
• Preparing and submitting a planning application for an end-terrace property in central Shrewsbury, including a rear extension, internal alterations and reconfiguration of the converted loft.
• Developing proposals for a garage conversion and rear extension or replacing the existing garage and extending to create a new annexe to a detached home in Clive.
• Working on the Building Regulations design and technical detailing for a project moving closer to construction.
• Liaising with clients and contractors regarding contracts and pricing as schemes progress towards the build stage.
• Advising prospective clients on the best way to achieve their goals before committing to a particular route.

Congratulations to Fran Ash for her 1 year anniversary of a 'Bathing in business’. Another inspiring and collaborative networking event this morning at Midlands air ambulance headquarters. The work they do is truly remarkable and they also have a large function room for hire with all proceeds going to fund the charity.

Back at one of our completed projects.

This extension formed part of a much larger renovation of the house, completely changing the way the ground floor works and connects with the garden.

I’m putting together a full case study showing the transformation and finished spaces, but here’s a little preview in the meantime.

With a little help from the client’s four-legged family member. 🐾

We’re delighted to share this substantial new detached home in the Shropshire countryside, just outside Market Drayton, now nearing completion.

House Gecko was appointed to assist with the architectural design, working collaboratively with Knights on the successful planning application and coordinating the specialist consultants involved.

It’s incredibly rewarding to see a project progress from the original design and planning stages into a completed family home.

Yesterday morning, I visited our clients home in Shrewsbury, their home extensions, loft conversion and interior reconfiguration are almost complete on site. The client is an artist and her interior design has elevated the whole scheme to something absolutely magical. Case study to follow.....

Planning permission granted in Shrewsbury Conservation Area

A smaller project this time, but one that’s going to make a really big difference to our client.

Our client loves being in the garden, it’s her happy place, but her tiny garden in Castlefields is currently more yard than garden, with an outbuilding and shed taking up much of the available space and very little privacy.

The plan is to remove the outbuilding and make the whole garden work much harder. A contemporary aluminium pergola will create a covered outdoor living area, with the warmth of timber slatted fencing, increased privacy and plenty of planting to soften everything.

By treating the house, boundaries, pergola, paving and planting as one cohesive space, the garden should feel much bigger, greener and more inviting.

Although it’s a relatively modest project, because the property sits within the Shrewsbury Conservation Area, the works also need planning permission, which we’ve just received.

The design has been carefully considered to sit sympathetically with the existing house, including reusing bricks from the demolished outbuilding, and Shropshire Council’s Conservation Team raised no heritage objection.

It’s a lovely example of how good design isn’t always about adding more space. Sometimes it’s about completely changing how the space you already have feels and works.

For our garden-loving client, this little yard will become a private, green and sheltered sanctuary where she can properly enjoy being outside.

I think this one is going to be rather lovely.
