Golly what a weekend!
I have today returned from a highly constructive meeting with James Murray, where we discussed the vital contribution made by gardeners and horticultural professionals across the country.
I am delighted to report that the discussions were extremely positive. James has agreed to support a reduction in tax for gardeners to 5%, recognising the important economic, environmental and social contribution that gardeners make to communities throughout the United Kingdom.
Perhaps most significantly, gardeners are now to be recognised as “National Treasures” — a fitting acknowledgement of the thousands of hardworking men and women who maintain our gardens, parks, green spaces and countryside.
This is a significant moment for the gardening profession. It demonstrates that when people come together, make their voices heard and put forward a strong case, Government can listen and act.
I would like to thank James Murray for his constructive approach and for recognising the importance of supporting the gardening community.
Gardeners are quite simply part of the fabric of Britain — and today, that has been recognised at the highest level.
