A carefully engineered solution can preserve a traditional appearance without compromising the structural requirements of a project.

These three precast concrete arches were manufactured and supplied to Treasure & Son Ltd of Ludlow. Due to the span of the openings, a conventional shallow brick arch would not have provided the necessary strength. A visible steel lintel may have supported the brickwork and roof above, but it would also have affected the appearance of the underside of each arch.

To provide both strength and a more considered finish, each complete concrete section was cast and reinforced with stainless steel to the required specification. Individual 15mm brick slips were then cut to varying sizes and angles, following the changing radius of the arch across both its face and underside.

Once incorporated into the surrounding brickwork and pointed, the completed units create the appearance of traditionally constructed brick arches while benefiting from the strength and consistency of a purpose-made precast structure.
