Blazing June has been a busy one for Gristwood and Toms Apprentices. Our year 1’s have been perfecting their climbing and aerial rescue techniques and they achieved a 100% pass rate on their NPTC assessment today, congratulations and well done to Archie, Rosie, Nathan and Sam ….. their life in the trees can now shift up a gear allowing them to take a greater role in front line teams……as Danny our rescue dummy would say…..THIS IS THE WAY
Our year 2’s have now completed all their pre-EPA requirements, a massive achievement for each of them. We have been pushing their levels of ability and confidence to prepare them for full time operational work, the section dismantling of a dead Black pine was a recent project which brought together their teamwork, rigging and aerial saw skills.
We will soon be advertising for our next Apprentice intake….if you want to train for the best job in the world with the best company in Britain keep a close eye on our social media…… who knows…..this could be you.

It's been a very busy month for our apprentices, our year 2's attended the Arb show where they got to see a wide range of machinery and the latest equipment on offer as well as meeting suppliers and networking on behalf of the company, in addition they all passed their chainsaw from a mewp assessment and have now achieved a 100% success rate for all their practical assessments. They are all now in their final phase of End Point Assessment preparation. Our year 1's have continued with their climbing and aerial rescue training as well as expanding their presence in other areas within the company, we have had full participation in our OPM spraying program as well as integrating into our nursery learning how to record and classify young trees along with a program of maintenance and formative pruning to support our planting teams. At Gristwood and Toms we recognise the benefits of involving our apprentices in the wider roles and opportunities that our industry has to offer, access to such knowledge and experience is vital in the future development of our company and it's employees.

At Gristwood and Toms, our year 2 Apprentice group have all passed their Chainsaw from a Rope and Harness NPTC assessment. They have given 100% dedication and effort from the early days of basic climbing, branch walking and aerial rescue before moving onto live tree work. Everything they have learned and done so far has led to this moment and today we all reap the rewards with 100% success. This group are now into the final phase of their training, the next landmark is their End Point Assessment, we will keep you posted on their progress.

Our year 1 Apprentices are progressing with their climbing training and last week they worked in collaboration with Newham Council to install bird boxes at Plashet Park to help increase bird populations and bio-diversity. Projects such as this help us fulfil our social value commitments and raise awareness in the local community of wildlife conservation and opportunities in our industry.

Our year 2 Apprentice group are well into their Aerial chainsaw training and have been working in Tower Hamlets to dismantle trees marked for removal, some for health and safety reasons some for habitat and ecosystem improvement. This provides an opportunity for them to to plan and organise work, carry it out safely and manage a busy site in a real life setting, key skills needed for their move into front line work. Included in their choice of equipment are Husqvarna T540 electric chainsaws and the excellent Arbortec forearm protectors. As they grow in confidence and ability we will be moving onto front line tree work in busy London streets, stay tuned to watch them progress...

Our year 1 & 2 Apprentice groups had an amazing day at the factory where we were given a guided tour of their production facilities. Starting with bare sheet steel and ending with the bespoke customer finish line we were shown the design, production and assembly procedure of their entire range of chippers. From state of the art laser cutters to hand built components we saw every detail at every stage. At Gristwood and Toms our front line teams use Greenmech chippers every day and it was very enlightening to see their construction and hear the dedication and commitment of Greenmech staff to producing innovative and high quality machines. A massive thank you to Martin, Carl and Spencer for looking after us all so well, this was a day to remember.

Last week we were invited to an Apprenticeship fair at Saint Clements Danes School to promote our Apprenticeship program, we had a lot of interest throughout the event from prospective applicants, some even came back bringing their parents with them for the evening session. Not only did this event help to further our ongoing social values commitment it was a great way to promote awareness of our company and industry to local school leavers by giving prospective applicants the opportunity to speak to 2 of our current apprentices in person. We left late and tired but on a promise that we will attend again next year, A big thank you to Sam and Rosie for their time and dedication.
