That moment when you’re taking a tree down and suddenly realise… your chainsaw isn’t quite big enough. 😂🌳

Feels like you’ve turned up to a coal mine with a toffee hammer!

Sometimes you just have to work with what you’ve got… and pretend it was all part of the plan.

Investing in the right equipment really does pay off.

One of the best investments we made last year was this portable winch — and honestly, it’s been used far more than we ever expected.

With a pulling capacity of up to 3.6 tonnes, a built-in brake system and, most importantly, being completely portable, it’s an incredibly versatile piece of kit.

We can carry it straight into the job and use it wherever it’s needed, whether that’s assisting with tree felling, controlling the direction of a tree or helping us safely manage difficult situations.

For us, investing in equipment isn’t just about having more kit. It’s about giving our teams the right equipment to work safely, efficiently and professionally.

You never know when you’re going to need that extra bit of pulling power — and when you do, it’s great knowing you can simply pick it up, carry it where you need it and get the job done. 💪🌳

Another investment that has definitely earned its place in the fleet!

Pruning London Plane Trees – Timing is Everything

The London Plane is one of the UK’s most common urban tree species, particularly along streets, in parks, schools, and public spaces. Renowned for its resilience, it can tolerate pollution, compacted soils, and heavy pruning, making it a popular choice in towns and cities.

One question we are often asked is, “When is the best time to prune a London Plane tree?”

Generally, the ideal time to carry out pruning works on London Plane trees is during the dormant season, typically from late autumn through to early spring. Pruning during this period reduces stress on the tree, improves visibility of the canopy structure, and avoids the irritation caused by the tree’s flowers and leaf hairs.

However, due to the vast number of London Planes in urban environments, works are often required outside of the dormant season. Highway clearances, building clearances, safety concerns, storm damage, and planned maintenance programmes can all mean pruning needs to take place during spring and summer.

When London Plane trees are in flower or in full leaf, they release fine hairs from their leaves and seed balls. During pruning, these microscopic hairs can become airborne and may cause irritation to the eyes, skin, throat, and respiratory system. For this reason, our climbers and ground staff wear suitable respiratory protection and PPE whenever these works are undertaken.

Despite this, London Plane trees respond exceptionally well to pruning and can tolerate a range of management techniques, including crown reductions, pollarding, and cyclical maintenance programmes when carried out to industry standards.

Properly managed London Plane trees continue to provide significant benefits to our urban environment, including shade, improved air quality, carbon storage, and enhanced biodiversity.

The right tree, the right work, at the right time.

I’ve got to say I’ve been driving an electric car for the past year now, and honestly… I love it.

But when people see me towing large equipment with it, the reactions are priceless…
“You’ll never pull that chipper with a battery.”“Bet it only gets 3 miles.”“Where’s the extension lead then?”

Meanwhile the electric car’s just sat there silently dragging a full tree surgery setup around Sheffield without breaking a sweat.
Feels like I’m living in the future while everyone else is still arguing with it at the traffic lights

Another solid job completed by the team 👊

We’ve recently carried out crown lifting and deadwood removal around a local graveyard, making the area safer for visitors and surrounding property.

Dead or hanging branches might not always be obvious, but when they fail, the consequences can be serious — from property damage to potential injury. That’s why safety is always our top priority on every project we take on.

If you’ve got trees that haven’t been inspected in a while, it’s always worth getting them checked.

Nathan once said to me, “Reece, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to climb again…”

Two years later and he’s at the TOP of trees like this… dismantling the whole thing like it personally offended him 😂🌳

Every year I buy bigger bars for the saws thinking, “Right, that’s us sorted now.”

Nathan: “Reece… we need a bigger chainsaw.”

I’m not even running a tree company anymore, I’m just financing Nathan’s obsession with bigger saws 🤦‍♂️😂

Fair play though — gone from doubting it to absolutely dismantling monsters like this

Not a boat heading upstream… that’s a failed tree being pulled out of the water 💪🌳

Great to see the capstan winch doing exactly what it does best — hauling serious timber out of a stream with control and efficiency.

Jobs like this are where the right kit makes all the difference 👌
