What are the responsibilities of leadership that people don't always see?

We're delighted that our Managing Director, Lisa Pogson, will be joining the panel at Connect Yorkshire's upcoming Leaders Lunch, The Invisible Responsibilities of Leadership, on Tuesday 20th October in Harrogate.

As well as leading Airmaster, Lisa is an Entrepreneur in Residence (EiR) for Connect Yorkshire, mentoring and supporting fellow business owners and entrepreneurs.

With over 25 years of business experience, Lisa will be drawing on her own leadership journey to contribute to an open and honest discussion about the challenges and responsibilities that often go unseen.

From supporting and developing people through change to balancing the demands of running a business with family life and personal wellbeing, the panel will explore the personal side of leadership that isn't always talked about.

The event will bring together women leaders to share experiences, exchange ideas and learn from one another through meaningful conversations.

It has been a busy week this week...

What makes a good place to work – and what should young people be looking for as they take their first steps into employment?

Our Managing Director, Lisa Pogson, was delighted to join a panel of local business leaders at the 3D Connect event at The Sheffield College’s Peaks Campus on Wednesday.

The event took place at Bloom, the College’s specialist centre for 16 to 24-year-olds, which focuses on preparing young people for adulthood, independence and the world of work.

Lisa joined James Biggin from Steel City Marketing Ltd, Adam Battey from Sheffield Theatres, Tom Hudson and Andy Skellett for a wide-ranging conversation led by some brilliant questions from the students.

And they certainly didn’t shy away from the big topics! 🙌

From profit, pay and apprenticeships to job satisfaction, neurodiversity and what really makes somewhere a good place to work, the students gave the panel plenty to think about.

Lisa shared some of Airmaster’s experiences of looking after and developing our people, including the importance of recognising what individuals are good at and creating opportunities that allow them to build on their strengths.

As an employee-owned business, developing our people and giving them opportunities to grow has always been an important part of Airmaster. Many members of our team have built long careers with us, progressing from apprentices and junior roles into management and director positions.

It was fantastic to see young people asking such thoughtful questions about their future careers and what they want from working life.

Thank you to 3D Connect and The Sheffield College for inviting Lisa to take part, and particularly to the students for keeping the panel on their toes!

Supporting the skills needed to grow the UK defence supply chain 🛡️

Earlier this week, Airmaster Managing Director, Lisa Pogson and Senior Marketing Consultant, Jackie Cook attended the launch of the Defence Technical Excellence College (DTEC) initiative with RNN Group UK.

The event, held at The Wharncliffe – RNN Group’s training restaurant – brought together employers and education and training partners to discuss the current and future skills requirements of the defence sector, and importantly, how industry can help shape the training needed to meet them.

Airmaster has worked within the defence sector for many years, delivering mechanical services on secure sites across the UK, so it was particularly interesting to hear about the plans for DTEC and the opportunities for employers to get involved.

The proposed developments include advanced manufacturing, automation and robotics, digital manufacturing, AI and cyber, autonomous systems, drones, welding and fabrication, and non-destructive testing – all focused on developing the technical skills required by a growing and evolving defence supply chain.

A key message from the morning was the importance of collaboration between employers and education providers. DTEC aims to engage more than 200 employers by 2030, involving industry in areas including curriculum design, workforce development, placements, live projects and innovation.

For Airmaster, developing the skills pipeline is an important part of enabling businesses across the region to take advantage of the opportunities emerging within defence and ensuring the sector has access to the people and capabilities it needs for the future.

Keeping up to date with the issues affecting businesses across the region is an important part of staying connected to our customers, suppliers and the wider industries we support.

On Wednesday morning, our Senior Marketing Consultant, Jackie Cook, represented Airmaster at the Nottinghamshire East Midlands Manufacturing Network meeting, held at the Holiday Inn Nottingham Castle Marina.

The morning included an update from East Midlands Chamber (Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire) Chamber on its latest Quarterly Economic Survey. Encouragingly, the Q3 results showed improvements across a number of indicators, including UK and overseas sales and orders, cash flow, workforce expectations and business confidence.

There are, however, still significant pressures facing businesses. Discussions covered concerns including inflation, taxation, business rates, access to skilled people and the wider cost of doing business.

Skills and developing the future workforce are particularly important to Airmaster. As a growing mechanical services business, we know first-hand how important it is to attract people into technical careers, invest in training and apprenticeships, and give people opportunities to develop throughout their careers.

There was also an interesting update on the British Industrial Competitiveness Scheme (BICS), designed to help eligible manufacturing businesses in Industrial Strategy growth sectors reduce their electricity costs.

A change of scenery for Lee-Anne, Sam and Max yesterday – including a trip into an aircraft cockpit!

Lee-Anne Batty, Team Admin & Marketing Assistant, Sam Casadei ACIBSE, Mechanical Design Engineer, and Max Brough, Mechanical Design Engineer, spent the morning at Skills Street for The Work-wise Foundation’s latest Better Together Forum.

It was a great opportunity to see first-hand the different ways Skills Street brings the world of work to life for young people.

From aviation and engineering to construction, retail and other workplace environments, the team had a chance to explore the facilities, try some of the activities and hear more about how they are being used to help young people discover different careers.

The morning also prompted some valuable conversations about the role employers can play in giving young people meaningful experiences of the workplace and helping them understand the breadth of opportunities available locally.

That’s particularly relevant to us at Airmaster. We’ve seen within our own team how apprenticeships, training and opportunities to progress can help people build successful long-term careers.

With Lee-Anne, Sam and Max themselves representing different roles and career routes within Airmaster, it was great to have them there contributing to the conversation and bringing back ideas for how we can continue supporting and inspiring future talent.

A great morning of networking, learning and catching up with familiar faces at the Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce Chamber Means Business Expo 2026 at the AESSEAL New York Stadium in Rotherham.

Airmaster’s Marketing Consultant, Jackie Cook, and Team Admin and Marketing Apprentice, Lee-Anne Batty, headed along to the event, taking the opportunity to catch up with customers, suppliers and other businesses from across the region.

It was particularly great to see Louisa Mc Culloch from Westfield Health, who will be visiting the Airmaster office tomorrow to answer any questions our team may have about their Westfield Health cash plans.

With Lee-Anne currently developing her marketing skills through her apprenticeship, we also made sure to attend the ‘Levelling Up Your Marketing’ seminar. It was a useful opportunity to hear different perspectives from the panel and pick up ideas to take back to the business.

Events like Chamber Means Business are always valuable for strengthening existing relationships, making new connections and finding out more about what other businesses across South Yorkshire are doing.

Congratulations to Scott Wolstenholme on his new role within Airmaster’s Employee Ownership Trust.

Scott, our Maintenance Manager – Maintenance & Small Works, has been appointed to the Board of Trustees of Airmaster’s Employee Ownership Trust (EOT), helping to represent the interests of our employee owners and play a part in shaping the future of the business.

His appointment follows the promotion of James Dawson to Design Director and the Airmaster Board, creating the opportunity for Scott to join the EOT Board.

As an employee-owned business, it’s important that our people have a genuine voice in how Airmaster develops, and the EOT Board plays an important role in ensuring the interests of our employees remain at the heart of our decision-making.

Celebrating 10 years of dedication!

Congratulations to our Project Engineer Matt Andrews, who is celebrating an incredible 10 years with Airmaster.

Since joining us as a Site Supervisor in 2016, Matt has built an outstanding career, progressing into his current Project Engineer role, where he now manages complex mechanical services projects from planning through to successful completion.

As part of his ongoing professional development, Matt (alongside Gareth Campbell, Ross Blackwood and Andrew Lambert) has also recently achieved the NVQ Level 6 in Construction Contracting Operations Management – a nationally recognised qualification that strengthens the leadership, communication and project management skills needed to successfully deliver complex construction projects for our customers.

At Airmaster, we're passionate about investing in our people. As an employee-owned business, we know that developing talented individuals like Matt helps us continue to deliver the high standards our customers expect.
