A lovely transformation of this mid-terrace London home, with a new rear extension creating a bright and spacious kitchen and dining area for the family. The extension opens up the back of the house and makes much better use of the available space, with roof lights bringing plenty of natural light into the new room.

The clients have a brilliant eye for interiors, and we love how they’ve brought their own personality to the space. The black kitchen in particular makes a real statement.

It’s always rewarding to see how our clients’ lives are transformed through good design, and how a relatively modest extension can make such a difference to the way a home works day to day.

After almost 60 years in the same family, this 1930s house was ready for a new chapter. Our clients bought the property knowing it had plenty of original character, but had been largely untouched since the 1970s and needed to be rethought for modern family life. A large rear extension and new dormer have transformed the home, creating generous new living spaces and making better use of the available space throughout. The dormer brings an abundance of natural light into the room, while the rear extension has strengthened the connection to the garden. New hard landscaping completes the transformation, creating a series of spaces to enjoy throughout the year. Inside, the house has been brought firmly into the 21st century, while its original character and period features have been carefully respected.

☀️ Win a £700 Home Design Consultation

This summer, we’re giving one lucky winner the chance to win a Home Design Consultation worth over £700.

Whether you’re considering an extension, rethinking your layout, or simply wondering how you could make better use of the space you already have, this is an opportunity to explore the possibilities for your home.

During the consultation, we’ll take the time to understand how you live, what isn’t quite working, and what you’d love to change. We’ll then look at ways to improve your home through thoughtful design, making the most of space, light and storage, while keeping your budget in mind.

Our aim is always to create homes that are practical, personal and enjoyable to live in, and we’d love to help one of you take the first step.

We do love it when contractors have a real eye for detail and go above and beyond to get it just right. This project in Beauchief did not disappoint - Andy and the team at Andy Sheppard have created the most stunning up-and-over rooflight, which floods the new kitchen-dining-living room with natural light and offers views of the garden and sky. The zinc cladding has been installed beautifully too, making the super modern black box really pop, against the classic Sheffield red brick of the original 1930s house.

This is home to a young family and we’re delighted to see them settled back in with their new daughter, really enjoying the spaces inside and out. We hope they have many years of happiness in their newly transformed home.

Great progress and some lovely detailing thanks to SDP Builders on our Totley extension and remodelling project. This generously proportioned dormer bungalow is having a facelift (front and back!) thanks to a rear extension, remodelled bay windows and entrance, all being tied together with re-rendering and brick slips to the existing walls. The brickies have gone to great lengths to create the angled planters next to the front door, and the soldier course details at the top of the walls, which we’re very happy about.

It’s really coming to life, and it won’t be long before it’s watertight and the kitchen starts going in. It’s always rewarding to see how our clients’ lives are transformed through good design (even if in the short term they have to move out or live in a building site!)

Our Millhouses extension project is almost complete! It was lovely to catch up with our clients and see the progress on this extension and remodelling project on a semi-detached period home. We have added a large rear extension, creating a light and inviting kitchen-dining-living room for this family of 5, and will be even more enjoyable when the rear terrace is completed. We have also converted the loft to create a master bedroom suite for the parents to retreat to! The bifold windows from the bedroom offer fabulous views over the local area- something lovely to wake up to!

We’re really excited to share that this redevelopment project in East Lincolnshire has recently received planning approval and is now officially on site!

This scheme started as an initial concept to explore the change of use, remodelling and extension of the existing building, formerly a vet practice - with the aim of creating the maximum number of residential units. The approved scheme will deliver 14 flats, mainly 1 bedroom and studio apartments.

We’re looking forward to seeing it all come together!

Something exciting ahead…!
We do love to see our plans in action on site, and these have been so neatly arranged by , we felt it’s worth a mention.
There is great progress being made on this wraparound extension in High Storrs, and we can’t wait to see the next steps. The bricklayers have put in some great effort to achieving the projecting window sill detail, which we’re delighted about!

Meet our Studio Manager, Esme.

“Before settling into studio life, I spent four years travelling the world as a solo backpacker. Each winter living in chalets and working in the mountains of Austria, Italy and France, and each summer I chased the sun, backpacking somewhere warm.”

Creativity has always been a big part of my life, I studied Graphic Design and in my spare time I love painting and crafting. Travelling sparked my interest in architecture around the world and how design reflects culture and landscape. Japan is a particular favourite of mine - where old and new design coexist harmoniously.

When I’m not in the studio, you’ll usually find me powered by coffee, chasing after my two energetic toddlers and exploring new places. Nature is my reset.. and sometimes my hiding spot.”

As we approach the end of the first month of 2026, we’re taking a look back at 2025 and some of our highlights and achievements as a practice.

It was a great year for us, becoming a team of 4 by welcoming Esme, our Studio Manager, and celebrating Jamie becoming a qualified architect.

We took on over 30 new projects, gained planning permission 15 times, and had 20 projects on site. But we also loved getting to know all of our clients - understanding their individual needs and their homes through listening carefully and approaching each bespoke project with creativity and practicality.

It has been wonderful to revisit completed builds and hear the fantastic feedback from our clients.

Here’s to 2026 being another great year for Astrid Architects.
