Behind the design: how does a scaffold solution develop? 👇🏼

A scaffold design rarely starts with drawing tubes and fittings.

It starts by establishing what the structure actually needs to do.

That means defining the design requirements and understanding the conditions the scaffold will be working within. From there, the proposed arrangement can be developed around factors such as loading, stability, support conditions, access and how the scaffold interacts with the existing structure.

This is where the engineering decisions begin to shape the solution.

As the design develops, calculations and structural analysis are used to test those decisions. Details can be adjusted, loads reconsidered and different arrangements explored until there is a solution that satisfies the requirements of the project.

The drawing then brings all of that information together in a form that can be clearly understood and constructed.

Our work at Carterknowle Junior School is a good example of that process, with the design developing through a number of stages before arriving at the final solution shown here.

It’s also why two scaffolds serving a similar purpose won’t necessarily require the same design.

The solution has to respond to the structure, loading and conditions of the individual project 🤝🏼

What scaffolding makes possible👇🏼

Looking back at some of the projects we’ve worked on, the variety is probably what stands out most.

Historic buildings with restrictions on where loads can be placed. Busy city-centre sites where access has to be maintained. Infrastructure projects with their own set of constraints. Structures where the solution has had to be developed specifically around what already exists.

They all look very different once they’re built, because they need to.

That’s the nature of working in this industry. The scaffold needs to work for the project, which means the solution has to respond to the site and the challenges that come with it.

We’ve shared a lot this National Scaffolding Week about the industry and the opportunities within it, so we thought we’d finish with some of the projects that show what all of that work leads to.

There’s more than one way into scaffolding 👷🏼‍♂️

When people think about a career in the scaffold industry, working on site is probably the first thing that comes to mind.

But that’s only one part of it.

At Creator alone, our team works across design and CAD, engineering, surveying, training and operations, with each area playing its own part in getting a project from the early stages through to site.

And the routes people take into those roles can look completely different. Some start out on the tools, some come through engineering or technical backgrounds, while others find their place in the industry through training, surveying or the operational side of a business.

That variety is one of the things that makes the industry interesting. There’s room to learn, develop new skills and take your career in a direction you might not have considered when you first started.

Nearly a month on from ScaffEx27, and the collaboration continues 🤝🏼

Sharing the stand with Anchor Bloc Ltd gave us a chance to show what we’ve been working on together and, more importantly, why the partnership makes sense.

Our team bring a different experience to a project and that’s where the value lies for us.

We can assess the same challenge from different perspectives, work through what’s needed and develop a solution that takes both the engineering and the practical requirements on site into account.

ScaffEx gave us the opportunity to bring some of that work into one place and show how our respective areas of expertise can complement each other.

And while the stand has now been packed away, the work we’re doing together certainly hasn’t.

There’s lots more to come from Creator and AnchorBloc, and we’re looking forward to seeing where the partnership takes us next 🙌🏼

We talk a lot about competence across construction 🤝🏼

But when it comes to scaffold design, what does competence actually look like?

Having access to design software isn’t evidence of it. Being able to produce a drawing isn’t evidence of it either.

Competence comes from the combination of knowledge, training and experience, alongside the technical understanding and judgement needed to make sound decisions.

And as design tools become more accessible, that distinction becomes even more important.

The question isn’t whether someone can produce a design.

It’s whether they understand the design well enough to take responsibility for it.

Technology can support competence. It can’t create it.

Ever wondered what millions of LiDAR data points become?👇🏼

If you saw our recent video of the 3D digital model we created for KP Snacks, here’s a closer look at what that data actually looks like.

Every detail you can see has been captured using LiDAR technology to create an accurate digital representation of the site.

It’s a working tool that helps project teams understand existing conditions before work starts, making it easier to plan access, coordinate different trades, take accurate measurements and make informed decisions throughout a project’s lifecycle.

For us, that’s where digital surveying delivers the most value 🙌🏼

A closer look at our work at Carters Yard 👇🏼

Here are a few of the 3D model visuals from a recent project at Carters Yard, showing the solution developed by the Creator team.

The project came with some important considerations from the outset.

Located in the city centre, public safety was a key priority, while the scaffold also had to be designed so that no loads were imposed on neighbouring properties.

There were also a number of areas where the existing structure needed careful consideration. Loads onto the flat roof, car park roofs and balcony areas had to be reviewed and approved by the structural engineer to ensure the existing building wasn’t overloaded.

With the building remaining occupied throughout the works, the design also needed to account for the safety of residents and make sure access and egress were maintained at all times, including routes required for fire evacuation.

The 3D model helped the project team visualise how the scaffold would interact with the existing building and surrounding areas before construction began, making it easier to understand the proposed solution and identify potential issues early.

It’s a good example of where detailed temporary works design and 3D modelling come together to help manage a complex site and deliver a solution that works safely around the people and structures already there 💚

Our work at Park Hill, Sheffield 👇🏼

Park Hill is one of Sheffield’s most recognisable developments, and we’re pleased to have played a part in the ongoing works at the site.

We’re currently supporting Phase 4, working alongside Urban Splash and Places for People as clients and developers, with GMI as principal contractor, Mikhail Riches as architect and IBN as scaffold contractor.

Our involvement has included temporary works design, site surveys ahead of the scaffold designs and drone surveys of the completed scaffold, helping to provide an accurate picture of the installation once on site.

Being a Grade II listed building, there were also conservation considerations to work around, while the scaffold needed to support a wide range of trades throughout the works.

From window installation and internal strip-out to brickwork and other building works, the design needed to provide a practical solution that could accommodate the changing requirements of the site without compromising the historic character of the building.

It’s always rewarding to see a design move from the drawing board onto site, particularly on a project with such a distinctive place in Sheffield’s history.

A drawing isn’t necessarily a design👇🏼

It sounds like a small distinction, but it’s becoming an increasingly important one.

Technology is changing the way temporary works are designed. Software is faster, analysis tools are becoming more sophisticated and AI is starting to find its way into engineering workflows.

We’re not against any of that. In fact, far from it.

Used properly, technology can make designers more efficient, improve consistency and help us explore solutions that might previously have taken much longer to develop.

But none of those tools replace the person making the engineering decisions.

✔️ Understanding loads
✔️ Considering stability
✔️ Challenging assumptions
✔️ Thinking about how something will actually be built, used and dismantled

That’s still down to the designer 👏🏼

The tools will continue to change but the responsibility that comes with using them won’t.

And that’s something we think is worth keeping sight of as the industry embraces new technology.
