One million Reclaimed Bricks will be reused to build Birmingham City FC’s new Powerhouse stadium 🧱♻️⚽
Bricks from the old Birmingham City Hospital are currently being cleaned and sorted to construct the 12 chimney-style towers that define the new Powerhouse Stadium ⚽
This is a big moment for Reclaimed Materials in the UK.
For years, Reclaimed Bricks have been seen as something for barn conversions, garden projects and listed building repairs. Now a world-class architecture practice is putting it at the heart of a major new sports stadium. That says a lot about where the industry is heading.
Why it matters:
- Carbon: For every Reclaimed Brick reused, that means another brick doesn’t need to be fired. On a project this size, the saving to the environment is huge.
- Heritage: Those bricks carry the history of the people who were treated, born and cared for in that hospital. You can’t design that into a new building or even put a value on that.
- Proof of concept: If Reclaimed Bricks can meet the demands of a stadium, it can meet the demands of almost any project.
At Reclaimed Brick Company we see every day how much quality material is still lost to demolition. Projects like this show what’s possible when clients, architects and contractors decide reuse is worth the effort. Hopefully it encourages more specifiers to ask the questions early: Could this be reclaimed? Should we consider Reclaimed Materials first?
