Most people would never kill a ladybug. But most people already have — because they didn't recognize her as a child.

The ladybug larva looks nothing like the adult. No red shell. No black dots. She's black, spiky, and shaped like a tiny alligator crawling through your leaves. She looks like something that shouldn't be on your plants.

So you remove her. Or you spray the leaf she's standing on without checking what else is there.

She was eating.

A ladybug larva works through a remarkable number of aphids before she pupates — more than the adult eats in the same stretch of time. The larval stage is the hungriest stage. The adult ladybug you protect laid those eggs right next to the aphid colony on purpose. She placed her children exactly where they needed to feed.

The identification takes a second once you know what to look for. A small black body with orange or yellow spots, six legs, spiny texture, found on a leaf near aphids — that's a ladybug larva. Not a pest. Not a threat. The future of every ladybug you've ever been glad to see.

🌿 How to protect what's already working for you:

- Before spraying any plant covered in aphids, check the undersides of nearby leaves for small dark larvae with orange markings — they may already be solving the problem
- If you see them, leave the plant alone for a week. The larvae will clear the colony faster than most sprays
- The spiky larva, the smooth orange pupa stuck to a leaf, and the familiar red adult are all the same insect at different stages — protect all three
- One generation of ladybugs on a single plant can reduce an aphid colony to almost nothing without any input from you

many birds an bugs find rest in palms as they have strong and collective branch growths close to the stem that fit small birds perfectly. Protected by the many outer leaves. ✌😁🐞

CALLING ALL TRADES SENSORY GARDEN BUILD

This beautiful fantastic school has been awarded a small £1500 for materials to create a sensory garden on a substantial space.

We all know how far this really goes with materials never mind time.
Sooo , we need your spares .. offcuts .
Or contacts of those who could.

To make safely.
We have offered our time and tools to help 1 of our sheffield community schools build interest in the outdoor sector.
Introducing our next generation of small ones to different experiences with plant's and wildlife.

The space has been designed to fit sections to experience SOUND , SMELL , TASTE , TOUCH AND GROW.
while keeping in mind plants and wildlife as the main theme.

Like their own mini outdoor magna.

We have pictures below describing what's within and what we could do with help collecting.

Some things are far more difficult, like the large diameter culvert pipe. We don't need 6 meteres length, just something to create another fun space.

We have tried to keep fun in mind while learning,
this is always the best way , even as adults.
Creating lasting memories and lessons of nature , food growth , pond and plant life, sound and the bliss of nature.

Congratulations to our 2026 OVO Foundation Nature Prize Adaptation & Resilience winners!

🐝 To make good use of an underused area of school land, Lenthall Infant and Nursery School is creating a bee pollination and sensory garden designed to boost biodiversity and climate resilience. 🐝

🌸 To address overheating and exposure issues, they will plant pollinator-friendly wildflowers, hedging, and trees.

💦 A rain garden and water play zone will introduce sustainable draining principles to tackle drought vulnerability, whilst giving students hands-on opportunities to learn about water conservation.
