Born from a long-standing partnership between the University of Sheffield and The Green Estate CIC, the company grew from ideas first explored by Professor Nigel Dunnett and rigorously developed by The Green Estate. The Green Estate is celebrating National Meadows Day on Sunday 5 July with the return of Marvellous Meadows! 🌼

This is the one event of the year where we open our entire site to the public.

On the day, you will be able to:

A range of newly laid Pictorial Meadows® turf in front of the St Matthew’s Estate in Lambeth.

Various turf mixes have been used for different height requirements and moisture gradients – from the damp rain garden edges to the dry mounds.

This is its first spring in place and numerous species are already emerging to create a diversified landscape.

We’re looking for a Marketing and Communications Manager to support the delivery of our ambitious new three-year growth plan by managing the day-to-day delivery and coordination of marketing and communications activity across The Green Estate CIC.

Working closely with the Senior Management Team and operational colleagues, the postholder will implement marketing plans that raise the organisation’s profile, communicate our impact, and support commercial sales, revenue generation and investment across the business.

This is a hands-on role, focused on producing high-quality content, managing campaigns and ensuring consistent, effective communication across all channels.

We were delighted to find out that the ‘Lifted by Birds’ show garden which features our Patchwork Quilt and Super Pollinator turf has received a gold medal at the RHS Malvern Spring Festival / Malvern Autumn Show!

Designed by Tom Saunders (Skylark Garden Design), Jon Pilling (The Intrinsic Link) and Amie Wheeldon (Bud & Bird Gardens), the garden features an ecology that delivers both beauty and biodiversity, offering seed‑rich planting, insect abundance and seasonal structure that supports birdlife.

We are deeply saddened by the news that our longtime collaborator and friend Nigel Dunnett has passed away.

Our sincere condolences to Nigel’s family and loved ones. He was a horticultural genius and will be sorely missed.

For more than 20 years he has taught and inspired so many of our team with his visionary approach to planting and landscape design.

We worked with Nigel to bring some of his amazing innovations to life, including Pictorial Meadows, and applying them to urban landscapes here in the Manor Castle ward in Sheffield, then the Olympic Park, and later at the Tower of London Superbloom and beyond.

We will miss Nigel popping up to our site with a group of students or international visitors, sometimes for a chat and lunch at the Rhubarb Shed Café.

Looking back, it feels very poignant to have been able to host the launch of the second edition of ‘The Dynamic Landscape’ last year with his close friend James Hitchmough, colleague Helen Hoyle and upcoming horticulturalist Owen Hayman. He talked then of handing over the baton to the next generation.

Nigel was a pioneer, leading the way in designing beautiful and resilient urban landscapes which are good for people, nature and the economy. We were privileged to have worked alongside him. Without Nigel, we would not be the organisation we are today, and for this we are truly grateful.

Rest in peace Nigel. Your legacy will live on in our hearts, our work and our landscapes.

Did you know that our popular Classic mix has been used at a variety of visitor destinations, including Clumber Park NT?

In 2023, our team went to see the very successful display outside Clumber Park’s visitor centre, which was previously just mown grass. As visitors walked through the garden gate into the open courtyard, they were immediately greeted by a visual spectacle of meadow flowers, all of which were buzzing with pollinators. As well as contributing to a significant increase in biodiversity, the meadows also helped reduce maintenance time and costs for the gardening team.
