Double stack 29 way consumer unit with RCBOs and SPD recently fitted at a large 4 bed detached property in Dronfield.

Fitting a board with this many circuits in a single day was a challenge. To make sure it went as smoothly as possible I spent 2 days testing everything first to make sure there were no existing issues on the wiring to avoid any surprises when re-energising circuits at the end of the day.

There’s nothing worse than having to start fault finding at 5:00 because a circuit won’t turn back on!

Chandelier installation completed recently.

This was a tricky little job which required a small scaffold tower and two people. The stairwell had also just been decorated and there was no light fitting there already so we had to figure out a way of running a new cable to the required position in the ceiling without causing any damage. We managed it though and the customer was delighted with the result!

A little side project I’ve been working on at home.

It’s a small mezzanine area that’s being converted into a games room.

RGBW LED strip fitted in recessed aluminium channel with diffusers on the underside of each shelf and operated by remote control.

I’ve had a lot of fun doing this and really happy with how it turned out!

I would love to do more bespoke LED lighting projects like this going forward so if you need lighting ideas for your kitchen, bathroom, media wall or other shelving please get in touch for a free quote.

Found under a kitchen base unit whilst carrying out inspection and testing prior to a fuse board upgrade.

This is the feed to a detached garage. Where to start with this one?!

It’s spurred off a socket on a 32A ring circuit without fusing down to 13A.

A service head containing an 80A fuse has been used as a junction box to connect the twin and earth to the armoured cable. You should only ever see these at the origin of an installation next to the electric meter and fuse board.

The armoured cable is a single core with the armouring being used as the neutral.

And there is no earth…

The previous owner of the house who did this was apparently an electrician as well, which makes it even more baffling. They will have known how dangerous this is 🤯

Old Wylex RCD main switch fuse board upgraded to an 18th Edition consumer unit with built-in surge protection.

Each circuit is now also protected by an RCBO, which is a circuit breaker and RCD combined. In the old board, there was one RCD protecting all circuits, which meant everything would be disconnected in the event of an earth fault. Now that each circuit has it's own RCD, only the affected circuit will disconnect. As well as being more convenient for the homeowner, it will ensure that any possible issues in the future are easier to identify.

A bit of fault finding on a shower circuit today. Customer said the shower kept tripping the RCD when in use. After spending a couple of hours lifting carpets and floorboards and following the route of the shower cable I discovered this. The insulation has almost completely melted away exposing the copper.

It's unclear whether this was caused by loose connections in the junction box or by undersized cable which was overheating. This was a 10.5kW shower running off a 6mm cable, which is actually compliant provided there is no insulation covering the cable at any point in it's run, however it is still not ideal.

The safest solution in this case will be to rewire the circuit using a 10mm cable. This completely eliminates the risk of the cable overheating and removes the need to join any cables in junction boxes under the floor, which should always be avoided where possible.

Lately I have been doing a lot of fuse board upgrades. They are often complicated and require a lot of problem solving so here is some information about what is involved.

I usually split a fuse board upgrade into 3 stages:

Inspection and testing:

This stage is similar to an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR): https://electrician-sheffield.co.uk/condition-reports/

The first day, or sometimes longer, is spent going round the house testing and checking behind accessories (sockets, light switches, etc) to ensure there are no faults. It is important that this is done before the board is changed. Modern fuse boards/consumer units contain devices called RCDs, which are a lot more sensitive than fuses or circuit breakers, and will trip in the event of an earth fault. This type of fault would go unnoticed by most older boards, as fuses and circuit breakers are only designed to trip in the event of an overload or short circuit fault.

If the board was changed first without testing, and there was an earth fault on the wiring, the RCD just wouldn't switch on and the property will potentially be left without any power and/or lights until the faults are identified and cleared.

Remedial work:

Any faults and/or non-compliant work is corrected at this stage.

It is rare to have a fuse board change where there little or no remedial work is required. Especially in older properties or where there have been multiple modifications done to the wiring by different people.

Board change:

Once the above stages have been carried out, the board change is often the most straightforward part of the job; as I can be sure there will be no nuisance tripping when the power back is switched back on. This stage, however, can be time consuming if the position of the board needs to change, as shown in the examples below.

Second fix of loft conversation wiring.

Loft conversations are always enjoyable jobs to work on, as it is satisfying to see a dark, cobweb-infested space transformed into a bright, cosy room. Unfortunately I did not take any 'before' pictures on this job so the difference cannot be seen here. I'll try to remember next time!

As the ceiling was quite low, and it wasn't practical to fit pendants or any other type of hanging light fitting, recessed downlights were fitted.

Interlinked mains wired smoke alarms were also fitted on each floor of the property to comply with Part B of the building regulations.

The rest of the loft conversation (including structural floor work, Velux window installation, plastering and joinery) was done by Arc Construction, my Dad's business. Between us we've got pretty much every trade covered except plumbing!

Lighting rewire, alterations to existing sockets and other modifications – second fix stage

Over the last few days I've been back to finish off the project from my last post. All the lights are now finally back up and running, which the customer was over the moon about after having to manage for nearly three weeks without any!

The new socket fronts, smoke alarms and boiler supply, which now includes a wireless receiver for a smart heating system, are now all fitted.

Everything in the garage is surface mounted so trunking has been fitted with fire rated clips to hold the cables in place and prevent premature collapse in the event of a fire, as per 18th edition requirements.

There is also now a fully working extractor fan in the bathroom which has been ducted to the outside through the soffit.

All work has been tested, a certificate issued and, as new circuits have been installed, local building control have been notified.
