Maybe This Is Where I’m Supposed to Be…
For the last two or three years, I’ve felt like something has been bubbling away in the back of my mind.
I’ve known that I wanted to do something connected to mental health, but I’ve never been completely sure what that would look like.
I’m not a therapist, counsellor or mental health professional, and I would never pretend to be. What I do have is my own lived experience of anxiety, depression and OCD, along with an understanding of how quickly life and the space around you can become overwhelming.
I know what it feels like when your surroundings start to reflect what is happening in your head. I also know how difficult it can be to make a start when you don’t know where to begin, or when you feel ashamed of what other people might think.
For a long time, I probably saw my own experiences only as something that had held me back. I’m beginning to realise that they may also have given me a better understanding of what somebody else could be going through.
I’ve always needed to keep my hands busy. Practical work gives my mind something positive to focus on, but I’ve also reached a point where I need my work to mean more than simply turning up, completing a job and getting paid.
Helping somebody regain a room, create a safe route through their home, organise their belongings or just make that first manageable bit of progress feels like work with a real purpose.
That doesn’t mean arriving with a team, filling skips and deciding what somebody should or shouldn’t keep. I don’t believe in forcing people to part with their possessions, especially when hoarding, anxiety, depression or chronic disorganisation may be involved. I’ve lived experience of both, hoarding tendencies and chronic disorganisation, so I know first hand the detrimental effects that can have.
Anyone offering clearance over a few days simply doesn’t understand hoarding disorder and how that can cause lifelong impacts.
It has to be their choice.
My role is to listen, work alongside them and provide practical help at a pace they can manage. Every item remains their decision, and every person deserves to be treated with dignity and without judgement.
Maybe everything I’ve experienced has been leading me in this direction.
Outdoor Indoor Cleaning Co Ltd is still evolving, and so am I. But its purpose is becoming much clearer.
I want to keep my own hands and mind busy while using what I’ve been through to help other people move forward.
Perhaps this is where I’m supposed to be.
