This one’s taken some time to put together as parts aren’t readily available. I’m a little bit different here at Nottw**d Ltd. In the past I’ve had lots of modern kit, but I was under pricing massively in my old business, I knew it, customers knew it, but I felt stuck.
So survival looked like buying tools to do a job, then selling them, and it’s been like that for a decade.

However, I’ve also faced some tough challenges due to my health, namely OCD, but I don’t know what happened, something changed inside me, and that’s how Nottw**d Ltd started in April of this year, despite being 2 years in the planning.

So for the last 12 months, I’ve been slowly repairing old machinery, so I could launch Nottw**d Ltd without being reliant on debt.

This has had a new gearbox, full carb rebuild, clutch, filters, tank cap, throttle lockout, period used head, guard and lots of cleaning.

However, I’m thinking of going machinery free, as my work these days is all hands on, as I’ve found alternative ways to manage plants.

That’s all in the pipeline though.

A few from within a 5 minute walk of our home, all in plain sight.

The top two images are of Japanese Knotw**d and the bottom two pictures are of Poison Hemlock.

I’m a qualified Japanese Knotw**d professional, however, it’s work I no longer take on, but I can recommend companies that do.

When the times right, I will do my PCA surveyors course, but until that time, I’m on the tools.

Oxalis Corniculata or as its better known, Creeping Woodsorrel.

It’s particularly hard to control as it’s spreads by multiple mechanisms, including creeping runners and explosive seed pods.

It does have edible and medicinal properties, but the plant contains oxalic acid, which consumed in large quantities can cause illness.

It has quite an intense flavour of apple if I’m honest.

Two birds with one stone.

At one commercial site I maintain, I identified areas around the grounds that presented a potential risk of falls from height.

It just so happens that these areas are also subject to vast amounts of ground elder, so my solution?

Planting 20cm bare root hawthorn whips quite a few years back now, on staggered rows.

The ground elder reduces the need to w**d, and keeps the roots of the hedge plants cool, but it’s also edible too, but then so are the young hawthorn leaves.

The hawthorn will also eventually shade out the ground elder and reduce its vigour.

It’s about turning problem into solutions, by reducing labour burden, and therefore costs, whilst year on year, reducing the risk with a natural barrier.

My Heuchera had reached the end of aesthetic lifespan, so today, they’ve all been cut up, leaves removed and potted up, ready to create fresh new plants.

At one of my customers, all but one Heuchera have been grown by me, from the plants in my little jungle garden.

Liquidamber, such an amazing tree for both small and large gardens.

This particular one is 15 years old and the autumnal hues are just amazing.

We’ve had many birds also nest within its canopy, which is also pretty cool too.

Biocides and organic herbicides.

There’s nothing I love more than seeing frogs and newts whilst caring for land, but did you know that biocides and organic herbicides often cause burns.

Organic herbicides and biocides are generally made from pelargonic and acetic acids.

Organic doesn’t mean low risk, and this is something that the general public aren’t aware of.

It goes without saying though, no products unless they are specifically designed to be used on or near water, should enter drains or water bodies.

It’s something that happens often, I see it often, as people allow run off to enter the drainage network, but if you happen to have a septic tank or your clients do, then you get microbial die off, which was also happen in pond filtration systems too.

When your, build on the go vision, works just how you envisaged with no plan, lots of hard graft and mainly materials sourced from around the grounds, it’s a win.

Now, I will say with this one, people helped barrow in some of the materials, but the hours I spent behind the shovel and knocking together some kind of retaining wall, as best I could, with what I had, was hard graft.

Then it was down to adding the planting of trees and the sowing of wildflowers.

A trip down memory lane, where back then, approx 10 years ago, this was what I was doing at £20 an hour for domestic clients as a sole trader.

My own little work in progress, but I’m just in the process of adding more trees, ferns, gingers and doing some landscaping.

I do thing the jungle clearing worked exceptionally well, but all the bamboos along the fence line have now gone, and are being replaced with multiple different fatsia from camouflage to megafatsia.

Honesty is an amazing wildflower, pictured here at Clumber Park within the walled gardens, but I do allow it grow where I garden, if clients like what nature offers.
