June is when fly season properly gets going. Most commercial businesses know it's coming but few have actually prepared for it. ☀️🪰

So here's what we tell clients to focus on this time of year.

🚪 Entry points first. Flies get in because there's a way in, it really is that straightforward. Doors and windows left open through the day are the main culprit. Fly screens are one of the most cost-effective solutions out there and for any premises handling food, a kitchen, a café, a production area, they're not optional. If you haven't got them fitted? This is the one to prioritise.

🗑️ Waste management is where a lot of businesses unknowingly make things harder for themselves. Flies are attracted to organic waste and the conditions around your bins matter more than most people realise. Overfull containers, no lids, waste stored close to the building. Each one is an invitation. Regular collections, covered bins, and keeping waste storage well away from entrances removes a big part of what's drawing them in. 🗑️

🪰 UV fly killers do work… but placement and maintenance matter enormously! A unit in the wrong position catches a fraction of what it should. A unit with a dead bulb catches NOTHING. If you've got one installed and haven't looked at it recently, it's worth checking.

If there's a wasp nest on your commercial site, please don't attempt to deal with it yourself. 🐝🚫

Disturbing a colony without the correct equipment and treatment approach causes wasps to react aggressively. With staff and customers nearby that's a safety risk that no business should be putting itself in!

There's also a good chance the nest isn't where it appears to be. Wasps travel surprisingly far from the colony, so the activity you're seeing on the surface doesn't always point to where the nest actually is. We find them in roof voids, wall cavities, plant rooms… places you'd never think to look. ⚠️

This is exactly what we're here for. We locate the nest properly, treat it safely with the right equipment and get your site back to normal with minimal disruption.

There's a point with a pigeon problem where you just stop using the space altogether. 🐦😤

The mess, the noise at all hours, the constant clearing up that makes no difference because they're back the next day.

This customer in York had reached exactly that point. The balcony had effectively become the pigeons' and they wanted it back. 😤

So we fitted netting across the full opening and sealed every access point and... that was the end of it! The pigeons moved on and the balcony became a usable space again pretty much immediately. ✅

Yorkshire summer has arrived. We're giving it until Thursday. ☀️😆

Wasps are out in force though and that part isn't a joke. This is the point in the year when nests start establishing properly and once they're settled they're a lot more work to deal with than catching them early.

This video is a good example of what we mean. Wasp nest treatment in an air brick, exactly the kind of spot they tuck themselves into and exactly the kind of job that's much simpler when it's caught before the colony gets too established.

Most retail businesses think about pest control reactively. A problem appears, they call someone to help. In some situations, that can work, but summer is where it tends to fall apart...

The combination of rising temperatures, increased footfall, more frequent deliveries and doors and windows staying open longer creates a very different environment to the rest of the year. Pests are very good at finding those changes before you do.

🪰 Flies are the most immediate issue. Warm air accelerates their breeding cycle significantly and in any retail environment with food or a café, the window between "a few flies" and "a hygiene concern" is shorter than most people expect.

🐝 Wasps build nests fast in summer. Entrances, roof overhangs, delivery bays. By the time they're visible they're usually already well established.

🐀 Rodents use the increased activity of the summer months, more deliveries, more open doors, more stock movement, to find access points that weren't there before.

None of this requires a dramatic infestation to cause a problem. In retail, a customer spotting something they shouldn't is often enough.

The simplest thing you can do right now is get a summer check booked in. Early activity is straightforward to deal with wheras established problems take longer and cost more.

Nobody talks about pigeons when solar panels get installed. A few months down the line, a lot of building owners wish somebody had. 🐦

Within a few months of installation a lot of properties start seeing birds investigating the gap underneath. It's warm, it's elevated, and it's sheltered from the weather and from predators. For a pigeon it's ideal. For the building owner it's the start of a problem that only gets worse the longer it's left.

We were called out to this one after the customer noticed birds regularly landing around the panels and wanted it sorted before nesting season got into full swing.

The fix is straightforward. Mesh is fitted around the full perimeter of the array and secured directly onto the panel frames, sealing every access point completely. No ladders needed afterwards, no maintenance required, no damage to the panels, and no harm to the birds. It simply removes the gap and with it the problem. ✅
