๐ง๏ธ IS YOUR DRAINAGE READY FOR AUTUMN?
We've had a very hot and unusually dry summer across Yorkshire this year. Whilst we've all enjoyed the sunshine, the prolonged dry weather can have an effect on the ground - and potentially on what is happening underneath it.
Something we've been seeing on drainage jobs is damaged and collapsed pipework.
When the ground becomes extremely dry, particularly where there are clay soils, it can shrink and move. That movement can put additional stress on underground drainage pipes, particularly older pipework or systems that already have weakened joints, cracks or other defects.
We've attended a number of properties where drainage problems have appeared following prolonged periods of dry weather.
Then there's root intrusion.
Trees and plants are naturally looking for moisture, and where underground drainage pipes have an existing crack, defective joint or opening, roots can find their way in. Once established inside the pipe, they can grow and trap debris, gradually restricting the flow.
And around Selby, Goole and the surrounding Yorkshire area, we also come across a lot of properties that rely on soakaway systems.
If a soakaway isn't performing properly, the problem can become very noticeable once the heavy autumn and winter rainfall arrives. Water that should be draining away can start sitting on lawns, patios and gardens, and in some cases can contribute to drainage backing up.
๐จ A blockage isn't always just a blockage.
If you've had a blockage recently, your drains are becoming slow, you've had repeated problems, or you've noticed water sitting where it normally doesn't, it could be worth finding out what is actually happening underground before the really wet weather arrives.
At DMI Draincare & Groundworks Ltd, we can carry out:
๐น CCTV Drainage Investigations
๐น Drain Cleaning & Unblocking
๐น Root Intrusion Investigations
๐น Drainage Repairs
๐น Land Drainage & Soakaway Investigations
A CCTV investigation can help identify problems such as root intrusion, displaced joints, cracks, fractures, collapsed sections and other restrictions within the drainage system.
It's much better to find a drainage problem on a dry day than discover it when you've got heavy rain coming down and water backing up into your property. ๐ง๏ธ
