I built my first Natural Swimming Pool, not because I like a challenge, indeed I'd prefer to be lazing by the side of a pool rather than digging it, but because it was the only way I could afford to have one. Over the past five years, building my own pools and

meeting experts on Natural Swimming Pools, I have re-thought the processes needed to create hygienic swimming water and I have come up with a system completely geared to fellow DIY pond builders. I try to minimise resources, incorporating reclaimed materials and I even make filters from reused household objects and domestic plumbing. In addition, my pools use a fraction of the electrical energy most Natural Swimming Pools require to maintain them. All of this is achieved without compromising healthy water. The water was recently tested and shown to be of drinking water quality. And of course, these pools have been designed to benefit wildlife - they are a nature reserve you can swim in! I hope by showing you how I've done it, you will be inspired to start digging for yourself.

Making your own pool means you can wild swim in pollution free water without being at the mercy of water companies. It also reminds us what our rivers and waterways used to be generations ago before our baselines were shifted by our more recent experience of polluted rivers. We should expect clean water rich in wildlife again.

How to survive a heat wave. The pool water level is dropping but there are plenty of flowers that are making the most of the heat. The blue flowers are pickerel w**d. Then there is yellow monkey flower, purple loostrife, pink geranium and white water lily and in combination with other pretty flowers popping up everywhere they are a delightful addition to the multitude of plants helping to filter the water.
