When most people think of Lincoln Castle, their eyes are drawn to it's towering walls and rich medieval history. But heritage isn't only found in stone. The castle grounds are also home to remarkable trees, some of which have stood for centuries, witnessing the same histroy as fortress itself!

These trees are more than just part of the landscape - they are living records of the castle gates. By including them in our 3D laser survey, we ensure that this natural heritage is acptured alongside the built environment, preserving both for future study and appreciation.

A measured building survey starts with a scanner like this one. We set up the FARO Focus on site, capture the space as a dense point cloud, then turn that data into accurate 2D drawings or a 3D BIM model.

This was mid-fit-out: bare concrete floor, exposed steel columns and metal deck ceiling. Scanning at this stage records the structure before the walls and services go in, which gives your design team a reliable base to work from. Each scan position takes a few minutes and records millions of points, so you get every column, beam and window opening measured rather than sketched.

Buildings like this are a good example of where laser scanning earns its keep. The stone quoins, moulded cornice and window details would take a long time to hand-measure, and every reading carries a chance of error.

One scan position captures millions of points in a few minutes, with the surrounding boundary, hedge line and levels recorded at the same time. We register the setups together into a single point cloud, then work that into 2D drawings or a BIM model for the architect or engineer.

A terrestrial laser scanner records millions of points per setup, giving you survey-grade coordinates of everything in range. That data becomes a registered point cloud you can measure from, model to BIM, or use as the basis for as-built drawings. It works just as well on an exposed shoreline as it does inside a building.

Confined space work in the middle of a city street, done at night to keep disruption down. Here the team is rigging a tripod and winch over a chamber, with a member kitted out in a harness and Tyvek suit ready to descend and scan below ground.

Getting survey-grade data out of a confined space takes proper access planning, gas monitoring and trained operators before any scanning starts. Once we're safely below, the scan captures the full geometry of the chamber and its services, so you get an accurate point cloud without anyone needing to spend longer down there than necessary.

Flashback from a frosty morning in the Highlands, and the FARO Focus is out capturing a stone-built cottage with reference spheres and targets set around the scan positions. Winter conditions don't stop the work. The scanner records survey-grade measurements of the stonework, timber and surrounds regardless of the cold.

Those white spheres and the chequerboard target you can spot in the shot are how we tie each scan position together into one registered point cloud. The result is an accurate 3D record of the building that architects and heritage teams can measure from and model against.

Throwback when we were at a riverside heritage building, capturing every brick and that carved stone panel above the entrance. You can see our scanner set up by the water's edge, with a black-and-white target fixed to the wall to tie the scans together.

Each setup records millions of points, and the targets let us register them into one accurate point cloud. From that we can produce elevations, floor plans and 3D models for restoration and repair work, without anyone needing to climb ladders to measure fragile masonry.
