Colorado Springs – a city that emerged from the vast expanse of the 1854 Kansas Territory to become a dynamic cornerstone of history and progress
Following the establishment of the initial local settlement in 1859, it was incorporated into the Jefferson Territory on October 24 and became a part of El Paso County on November 28.
The early 1870s witnessed a significant influx of immigrants from England, making Colorado Springs affectionately referred to as "Little London" in the local context. In 1871, the Colorado Springs Company mapped out the towns of La Font (later known as Manitou Springs) and Fountain Colony, upstream and downstream, respectively, of Colorado City. Within a year, Fountain Colony underwent a renaming and official incorporation as Colorado Springs. The seat of El Paso County transitioned from Colorado City to the Town of Colorado Springs in 1873. Subsequently, on December 1, 1880, the city expanded its borders to the north through two annexations.
Several coal mining sites contributed to the mining landscape, such as Cheyenne Mountain, Cragmor, Papeton, Pikeview, Roswell, and nearby Franceville. Institutions like the Colorado Midland Railway, Midland Terminal Railway, Golden Cycle Mining and Reduction Company, and Western Museum of Mining & Industry played pivotal roles.
The city's expansion continued during 1889-90, including Seavey's Addition, West Colorado Springs, East End, and another North End addition. The year 1891 saw the development of the Broadmoor suburb by the Broadmoor Land Company, encompassing the renowned Broadmoor Casino. By December 12, 1895, the city boasted "four Mining Exchanges and 275 mining brokers." By 1898, Colorado Springs was demarcated into quadrants through the intersections of Cascade Avenue and Washington/Pikes Peak avenues.
Between 1899 and 1901, the Tesla Experimental Station was operational on K**b Hill, while aviation activities commenced in 1919 with flights to the fields adjoining the Broadmoor area.
From its humble beginnings as part of the Kansas Territory to its pivotal role in the gold rush and subsequent transformations, the city has evolved into a vibrant hub of culture, industry, and community.
