There has been an increase in service calls for Bed bugs. Hot weather which insects generally do well in and more travel for holidays mean more spread of these nasty little critters. The following may assist in avoiding getting them in your home.
1 . When you arrive at holiday accomodation use a bright light and check the the back of the bed headboard, bed frame and matress seams. If you see live moving bugs or blood spotting around cracks and crevices in bed dont stay- ask for a bug free room and repeat check.
2. Second hand furniture carry out above checks . If a matress loons too good to dumped there may be a reason for it!
3. If you find bed bugs during your stay leave your suitcases and any unworn clothing outside your home. Bag clothing hot wash it and su ject to label tumble dry on a hot heat. Once unloaded place bag used to carry clothes outside in waste bin.
Bed bugs love nooks and crannies in suit cases. Throw cases away or get a pest controller to steam or heat treat the cases.
Prevention is always better than cure!

Whats going on at Good Knight Pest Control?. I am very busy with Rats at the moment. many jobs involve water whether it be bird baths , water butts or ponds etc. rats need to drink about 60 millilitres of water a day that's a lot. So with the drought we are experiencing they are desperate to find water sources. If you have rats in your garden think about if there are any water sources and if possible deny them. This is some times enough to deter rats and they may move else where . When rain finally arrives rats may be driven out of the lower sections of sewers and enter homes / gardens but at the moment they have free reign of the deeper sections of sewers and may be are not seen so much as normal .
An unusual job I had recently was a stoat entering a property and keeping the occupants up all night. After checking property several entry points were sealed. The wall shown in photographs was close to the ground as it was in a bank and I suspect Mr stoat was climbing up and into the wall cavity that was open behind the soffits .

Bee swarm time . BE kind. Calls have started for swarms. Quite often thought to be wasps or hornets. Wasps and hornets dont swarm like bees so if you see thousands of insects in a swarm its likely to be bees. Bee hives unlike wasps nests dont die off at the end of the year and every so often a new queen will take a load of worker bees and fly off in a swarm to start a new colony some where else. The bees gorge on honey before leaving and as a result are usually quite docile. If you see a swarm dont panic, steer clear of it and call the Isle of Wight bee keepers association for advice .I dont treat bees under any circumstance as they are pollinators, under pressure and much needed for our plant lifes sucess.
