A quiet week after pest treatment is good news, but it isn't proof the job's done. And a single sighting isn't proof it's failed either.

That's why a simple record between visits helps so much. Note when and where you saw something, what it was, and anything that's changed at home, like a leak or building work. Leave our bait stations and monitors where they are, and tell us if you've used any other products.

Seen a rat in the garden? It doesn't mean your garden is dirty. It means something there is supplying food, water, cover and a route.

The bird feeder is usually the food. Mostly the seed scattered on the ground underneath it, which is a reliable nightly meal in a fixed location, though rats climb well enough to reach the feeder itself too. If you've already got rats, our advice is to stop feeding the birds completely until the problem is dealt with, then start again with a tray underneath and the ground kept clear.

The cover is usually decking. The void under a raised deck is dry, warm and impossible to inspect, and it's where we find burrows more often than anywhere else.

On bait: rodenticide is the right tool for most rat jobs and we use it every week. The issue is how it gets used. Shop-bought bait is deliberately weaker than professional product, so rats often take a sub-lethal dose, which is exactly what breeds resistance. And loose bait in an open position is reachable by hedgehogs, dogs and ground-feeding birds. Used properly, in secured tamper-resistant stations placed on the runs after a survey, none of that applies. That's the difference a professional makes.

It's that time of year, jumpers come down from the loft and there are holes in them.

Worth knowing: the adult moths you see flying about can't actually eat. They have no functioning mouthparts. All the damage is done by larvae, and it was done months ago in the dark.

So the holes you found this week are historic. The question is where the larvae are now.

Usually it's the carpet under the wardrobe or the bed, or that last few inches of carpet tucked under the skirting board. And in older St Helens terraces there's one we find again and again, an old bird nest sitting in a blocked-off chimney. Feathers are keratin, so it's a permanent food supply inside the wall, and it's why some bedrooms keep getting reinfested no matter how much they're cleaned.

Think you have seen a cockroach in the kitchen? Start with the evidence, rather than a spray bought in a hurry.

Note where and when it appeared. Keep a clear photograph if you can take one safely, and explain whether there have been other sightings. The type of insect and the conditions around it affect the assessment.

Protect food and clear accessible spills, but ask before moving appliances or emptying cupboards into other rooms. Tell the pest controller about any treatment products you have already used so the next step can be planned properly.

🚨 WASP SEASON IS STILL IN FULL SWING! 🚨
Think wasp season is coming to an end? Think again! 🐝

Another HUGE wasp nest treated by MD Pest Control Solutions in Warrington. Notice the other nests in the video? These are remnants of previous seasons, and they highlight something interesting about recurring wasp problems.

Each year, new queens emerge from established colonies and find somewhere to hibernate over winter. When spring arrives, surviving queens seek out suitable locations to establish new nests.

While wasps don't typically reuse the same nest year after year, properties with suitable nesting spots can experience repeat wasp problems. The same lofts, roof spaces, outbuildings and sheltered areas can attract new queens season after season.

Scratching above the bedroom ceiling? Here's how to work out what it is.

If the noise wakes you around first light and dies off by mid-morning, that's squirrel. They're active in daylight. Rats are nocturnal and you'll hear them from dusk. Mice are much lighter and quicker.

Squirrel calls climb every autumn because this year's juveniles are dispersing to find their own territory, and a warm loft beats a drey in November.

The serious bit is chewed cable. It's a fire risk and it can become an insurance problem.

Worth knowing before you ring anyone. Releasing a trapped grey squirrel back into the wild is unlawful, so if someone offers to relocate yours to the woods, that isn't a real option. And never let anyone seal the roof before the loft is confirmed clear. A squirrel that's been proofed in will try to escape, and it can cause further damage elsewhere in the process.

Spider season has started, so here is the post nobody in our trade usually writes: you almost certainly don't need a spider treatment.

The big fast ones you're seeing are male house spiders that have lived in the fabric of your house all year and are now roaming to find a mate. They're not invading from the garden because it's turned cold, and most will be gone by mid-October.

We don't recommend blanket spraying for spiders. It barely contacts them, it kills the insects they were eating, and it puts residue in your home for no lasting benefit.

What does work is duller: change outside lights to warm or amber LEDs, brush-strip the door gaps, seal around pipe entries, and keep taking the webs down.

Every year the flea calls start in the second half of August, and every year people say the same thing: it came out of nowhere.

It didn't. Fleas breed fastest in warm, humid weather, so late summer is peak season. Then pets come home from kennels or the cattery, the house has been shut up and empty for two weeks, and everything emerges at once when the family walks back in.

The part most people don't know: flea pupae can lie dormant in your carpet for months inside a cocoon that insecticide can't pe*****te. That's why a supermarket bomb seems to work for 48 hours and then the bites come back. It's also why the problem often returns when the heating goes on in October.

🛏️ BEDBUGS — THEY’RE NOT ATTRACTED TO DIRT!

Although there is a certain stigma surrounding bedbugs, they can turn up in even the cleanest homes, hotels and properties. They’re excellent hitchhikers and can be transported on luggage, clothing, furniture and other belongings.

But how do they actually find you?

Bedbugs follow the signs of a host and are attracted by several biological cues, including:
💨 CO₂ – The carbon dioxide we breathe out helps alert bed bugs that a potential host is nearby.
🌡️ Body heat – Once they're in the vicinity, warmth helps them locate a suitable feeding site.
👃 Human odours – Other chemical cues from our bodies can help them home in on us.
🪳 Aggregation pheromones – Bed bugs also produce chemical signals that help them find suitable harbourages and congregate together.

And then there's reproduction…

A female bedbug can produce around 200–500 eggs during her lifetime, with females capable of laying several eggs per day under favourable conditions. Eggs are often hidden in cracks, crevices, furniture and around bed frames.

That’s why simply killing the ones you can see isn't enough. A proper inspection and treatment strategy is essential when dealing with a bedbug infestation.
