Coffey has completed construction works of the Ballybane Road and Castlepark Road Cycle Network Scheme on behalf of Comhairle Cathrach na Gaillimhe / Galway City Council, delivering new active travel infrastructure through a busy residential, educational and commercial area of Galway City.
Beginning in February 2025, the project has delivered approximately 2.4 km of new footpaths and segregated cycle infrastructure along Ballybane Road and Castlepark Road, creating improved facilities for people walking, wheeling and cycling through the area.
The completed scheme includes:
โข Protected cycle tracks and new footpaths along both routes.
โข 36 upgraded junctions, incorporating raised crossings and cycle priority measures.
โข 13 pedestrian crossing points.
โข 15 bus stops.
โข Upgraded signalised junctions at Ballybane Road/Castlepark Road and Castlepark Road/Monivea Road.
โข Full carriageway resurfacing and associated landscaping.
The route serves local communities as well as Atlantic Technological University and a range of businesses, industrial facilities and community amenities. It has also been designed to connect with the wider development of Galway City's active travel network.
Delivered by Galway City Council's Active Travel Department and co-funded by the National Transport Authority and the Government's Urban Regeneration and Development Fund, the project forms part of ongoing investment in walking and cycling infrastructure across Galway City.
Completion marks the end of a significant programme of works undertaken while maintaining access through a busy urban environment. We would like to thank Galway City Council, the project partners, local residents, businesses and road users for their cooperation throughout construction.
