Recently, our MD Joe had the privilege of visiting one of our local primary schools for their ‘Aspirations Day’.
Joe and his glamorous assistant, Matthew, spent the afternoon talking with curious pupils about life as a Land & Engineering Surveyor — explaining how we measure and map the world so that roads, bridges, buildings and railways can be built accurately and safely.
We covered everything from traditional total stations and GNSS/GPS to drones and 3D laser scanners.
Their questions were brilliant. “Do you really get to fly drones for work?” “What would happen if you crashed a drone into the sea?” “What happens if your measurements are wrong?” “I know that’s not a speed camera, it’s a laser!” Their curiosity was a great reminder of how exciting this profession can look when you strip it all back!
Moments like this highlight something important: Surveying is often the quiet foundation of the built environment. Without accurate spatial data, nothing else can be designed or constructed properly. Sharing that with the next generation felt both rewarding and necessary.
Grateful to St Wenn school for the invitation, and to the pupils for the energy and excellent questions! 🙏
