Hydrangea macrophylla varieties are well-known for their unique ability to change flower color based on soil chemistry. This color shift is not determined by the plant variety alone, but rather by the availability of aluminum ions in the soil, which is directly controlled by soil pH.
Acidic Soil (pH 5.5 and below): Aluminum is readily absorbed by the plant, resulting in blue blooms.
Alkaline Soil (pH 6.0 and above): Aluminum availability is restricted, causing the flowers to turn pink or red.
Because natural soil conditions tend to shift over time, preserving a vibrant blue hue requires active soil management using amendments such as aluminum sulfate, sulfur, or organic matter to maintain acidity.
What methods do you find most effective for maintaining acidic soil and preserving blue hydrangea blooms in garden settings? Please share your experiences and recommendations in the comments below.

🌿 Tough, Coastal, and Beautiful! 🌊
Looking to upgrade your garden with plants that handle salty sea breezes and dry spells like a pro? Ornamental grasses are your ultimate low-maintenance secret weapon!
At Kits Nursery, we grow both of these stunning varieties and they are available now:
Stipa gigantea (Giant Feather Grass): A showstopper featuring towering, oat-like golden panicles that shimmer above a neat evergreen clump. Perfect for adding height and dramatic architectural flair.
Stipa tenuissima (Mexican Feather Grass): Incredibly tactile with ultra-fine, silky green foliage that ripples gracefully in the slightest coastal breeze, turning a gorgeous blonde by late summer.
