I’m David, the person behind DMG Landscapes, based in St Albans.

I specialise in garden design, planting, soft landscaping and ongoing garden care, from creating naturalistic borders and planting schemes to establishing new gardens and keeping established ones thriving.

I also take on small landscaping projects, using natural materials and a practical approach to create spaces that work with their surroundings.

A garden I originally designed and planted back in 2017.

Over the years the trees have really matured and the garden has become much shadier, with lots of lovely dappled light coming through the canopy.

For the new planting I’ve used a mixture of native and non-native plants that can cope with the new conditions, including the increasing dry periods we are experiencing.

The planting is a mix of different textures, heights and shapes, with plenty of plants for wildlife too.

It’s nice to see how a garden can change over time and how the planting can be adapted to suit it.

Working with what the garden gives you rather than fighting against it. 🌿

🌱 Build Better Soil for Drought Resilience

One of the best ways to help your garden cope with increasingly hot and dry summers is to improve the soil.

Adding organic matter helps improve soil structure, supports healthy root growth and can help the soil retain moisture for longer.

There are several different materials we can use, depending on the soil and the needs of the garden:

🍄 Mushroom compost
A useful soil improver and mulch that adds organic matter and helps improve moisture retention.

🌳 Wood chippings
Excellent as a mulch around trees, shrubs and established planting. They help reduce evaporation, protect the soil surface and gradually add organic matter as they break down.

🍂 Leaf mould
Excellent for improving soil structure and moisture retention. It is particularly useful around woodland-style planting and shade-loving plants.

🌿 Garden compost
A versatile all-round soil improver that adds organic matter and nutrients while helping improve the structure of the soil.

🐴 Well-rotted manure
Rich in organic matter and nutrients, making it useful for improving poorer soils and preparing planting areas.

🌾 Green waste compost
A useful recycled soil improver that can help increase organic matter and improve the condition of tired soils.

Adding organic matter isn't just about feeding plants. It is about building healthier soil that can hold moisture, support stronger roots and cope better with periods of drought.

A good layer of mulch can also reduce evaporation from the soil surface and help keep plant roots cooler during hot weather.

Autumn is an excellent time to improve your soil, particularly after a dry summer. Adding organic matter in September, October and November gives it time to work into the soil before next year's growing season.

Hi, I’m David, the person behind DMG Landscapes.

I’ve been working in the gardening and landscaping industry since 2009, helping people create and maintain gardens that are practical, beautiful and full of life.

I work on everything from garden design and planting to landscaping projects and regular garden maintenance.

My approach is simple — I like gardens that feel natural, work well for the people who use them and provide plenty of space for plants and wildlife. 🌱

Over the years I’ve been lucky enough to work on all sorts of gardens and projects, including award-winning show gardens, large landscaping projects and smaller garden transformations.

I’m a one-man business, so when you work with DMG Landscapes, you deal directly with me from the initial idea through to completion.

🌿 Pond Maintenance and Creating Natural Wildlife Ponds

A pond can be one of the most valuable features in a garden for wildlife, especially during periods of drought.

Even a small pond provides an important source of water for birds, insects, amphibians and other garden wildlife. During hot, dry weather, natural water sources can become scarce, making garden ponds increasingly important.

At DMG Landscapes, we can help with both pond maintenance and the creation of new natural ponds, with a focus on encouraging wildlife and creating a more natural look.

Pond maintenance can include:

• Clearing excessive silt and organic matter
• Removing invasive or overcrowded plants
• Rebuilding and reshaping tired ponds
• Adding rocks, logs and natural features
• Introducing suitable native pond plants
• Improving habitats around the pond
• Creating wildlife-friendly areas for insects, frogs, newts and birds

When creating a new pond, we aim to work with the natural character of the garden rather than creating something overly formal. Rocks, dead wood, marginal plants and varied depths can all help create a thriving ecosystem.

August and September can be an excellent time for pond maintenance, before autumn and winter, while the pond is still accessible and wildlife activity begins to slow.

❄️ Winter Lawn Care: What You Should and Shouldn’t Do ❄️

Most lawn damage actually happens in winter, not summer. Here’s how to protect your lawn so it comes back greener in spring 👇

✅ DO
• Keep leaves cleared – wet leaves cause rot and disease
• Stay off frozen grass – footprints damage dormant turf
• Keep grass slightly longer going into winter
• Check drainage – standing water kills roots

❌ DON’T
• Mow frozen or waterlogged lawns
• Apply fertiliser without knowing soil needs
• Ignore moss – winter is when it spreads fastest

🌱 Tip:
If your lawn has moss, bare patches, or poor drainage, winter is the best time to plan fixes so spring growth isn’t wasted.
