Sneak peek at a Grade 1 listed landmark we’ve been drafted in to help restore.

This stunning piece of iconic Isle of Wight history has witnessed so much over the years. Construction began in 1862 and was completed five years later to protect Portsmouth and the Solent from the French under the ruling of Napoleon III.
During WWII it was modified with the addition of defensive bunkers, whilst the remaining scars of the war are still present. Today it still plays an important role, with a working Starlight AIS system helping monitor and control the shipping channel. A meeting with the director this week was nothing short of a masterclass in history.

There’s an incredible amount of history within these walls, and it’s a real privilege to be trusted with work on such a significant site. Being recommended for projects of this calibre is something I’ll never take for granted. But is a true reminder that anyone who puts in 110% dedication and studies the science behind the subject they are within to become a true expert, they to can reap the rewards 💙🧱

Can anyone guess where we are?

Recently completed in Cowes — an early Georgian chimney brought back from the brink after years of exposure to harsh seafront conditions. 🌊

This one had truly run its course. We carefully dismantled it, lowering each brick down three tiers of scaffold, cleaning and sorting them so they could be reused in their original positions. With listed planning constraints in place, retaining as much original material as possible was key.

We installed period-sensitive stepped slate trays, along with new step flashing and a new apron to the front. The chimney was then rebuilt using a slaked hot lime mix for maximum breathability, following the original construction methods.

For the finish, we pointed using wooden lapping tools and a churn brush — traditional techniques that really bring the work to life. The result speaks for itself. 😍

The flaunching was mixed with locally sourced horsehair from Calbourne, keeping materials as true to their origins as possible.

It’s these small, thoughtful details that make heritage projects stand out.

A pleasure as always 💪
