Project nearing completion | Godshill 🏡

It’s always great to see one of our designs coming to life, and we were delighted to receive these latest photos from our clients in Godshill.

The project involved a substantial extension and alterations to the existing home, creating a much larger, brighter and more open living space.

A vaulted ceiling, rooflights and extensive glazing bring plenty of natural light into the new extension, while the herringbone flooring helps tie the existing and new spaces together beautifully.

As part of the finishing works, bi-fold doors will be fitted between the original house and the extension. These formed part of the design solution to accommodate the large amount of glazing, while allowing the spaces to be opened up and enjoyed together.

There’s still some decorating and finishing to go, but it’s fantastic to see the transformation taking shape — we’re looking forward to seeing the finished result! 👏

A slightly different one from us today — this is my own flat roof extension at home.

The original conservatory has been replaced with a much more practical open-plan living space, with bi-fold doors, a roof lantern/atrium and a cleaner, more modern rear elevation.

It’s a good example of how a well-considered extension can completely change the way a home feels and functions, creating a brighter family space while still keeping plenty of character and personality.

The Vine Inn, Ryde — Grade II Listed Building

Back in 2016, we were involved in the conversion of this former guest house into a residential dwelling.

As a Grade II Listed Building, the project required a careful and considered approach, with both internal and external renovation works carried out in close consultation with the conservation team.

Externally, one of the key elements was the repair and replacement of the timber oriel window, which had fallen into poor condition. The aim was to retain the character and historic detailing of the building while bringing it back into practical residential use.

Projects like this are always about finding the right balance — protecting the heritage value of the building while allowing it to have a sustainable future.

Binstead Hill, Ryde – Then & Now.

A look back at one of our earlier schemes from 2007 involving the redevelopment of a prominent corner site at Binstead Hill.

The original dwelling was an attractive and rather ornate building with a great deal of architectural character. Unfortunately, extensive structural movement caused by surrounding trees had resulted in significant damage to the property, to the extent that repair and retention of the building was no longer considered economically viable.

The approved redevelopment comprised:

• Demolition of the existing house and outbuildings
• Construction of two new houses and six flats
• Associated parking provision
• Alterations to the existing vehicular access together with a new access arrangement

It’s always interesting revisiting older schemes and seeing how architectural styles, layouts and planning approaches have evolved over time.

Tyro House, Winton Street, Ryde — from private stables to new homes

We recently came across some historic images of Tyro House in Winton Street, Ryde, and thought it was well worth sharing the story.

Before becoming Tyro House, the building formed part of **Quelch’s Private Stables**, with the site once used for stables, coach-houses, storage and related commercial use. The historic image shows just how different Winton Street would have looked at the time, with horse-drawn carriages outside the building.

By the late 1980s/1990s the building had fallen into serious disrepair and was derelict. As part of the later redevelopment, the building was demolished, but important architectural features were retained and incorporated into the new Tyro House scheme.

Steve Holbrook was involved in the project prior to its completion in 2000, helping bring the site back into use as residential accommodation.

It is a great example of how a historic site can be redeveloped while still retaining a visual connection to its former character and local history.

Projects like this are always rewarding to look back on, especially when the finished building continues to contribute positively to the street scene many years later.

Before and after — infill dwelling replacing an existing garage

A great example of how underused land within an existing residential plot can be carefully redeveloped to provide a new home.

The original site contained a detached garage and an area of infill land between existing properties. The proposal replaced the garage with a new dwelling, making much better use of the site while respecting the neighbouring houses and the established street scene.

Projects like this require careful consideration of access, parking, overlooking, scale, design and the relationship with neighbouring properties, but when handled properly they can unlock real potential from otherwise underused spaces.

**Replacement double garage with storage over**

A great before-and-after example of how a detached garage can be made far more practical while still respecting its setting.

The original garage was narrow and difficult to use, with the client unable to get their car in comfortably. The replacement building now provides a proper double garage, together with a stair up to a useful storage area above.

The design was carefully considered due to the site being within a conservation area and positioned close to existing trees. The finished result keeps a traditional appearance, with stonework, slate roof covering, decorative bargeboards and detailing that sits comfortably alongside the main house.

One of the trickier parts of the build was the boundary-side gable, where the close proximity of the existing hedging left very limited working space. Credit to the builder for achieving such a neat finish in a difficult location.

A practical upgrade, but with the appearance and detailing needed for a sensitive location.

👀A look back at one of our projects from 2006 — nearly 20 years ago 👀

This project involved the alteration and enhancement of an existing detached property, with careful consideration given to the character of the building, the surrounding street scene and the relationship with neighbouring properties.

The design introduced a more balanced and traditional appearance, using gables, timber-style detailing, brickwork and proportioned window arrangements to create a stronger frontage while still respecting the original form of the house.

As with many extension and alteration projects, the work involved more than simply producing drawings. The existing building had to be assessed, the design developed around the original structure, and the proposals negotiated through the planning process to ensure the finished result sat comfortably within its setting.

Nearly two decades later, it is always rewarding to look back at projects that have stood the test of time.

📸 Carter Avenue Transformation – Bungalow to Two-Storey Home 2007

A great example of how thoughtful design and planning can completely transform a property.

This project started as a modest single-storey bungalow and was successfully redeveloped into a spacious two-storey family home — significantly enhancing both the appearance and functionality of the property.

One of the key challenges was ensuring the existing foundations could support the additional load. Careful investigation and structural assessment were carried out at an early stage to confirm suitability, avoiding unnecessary cost and disruption.

From a planning perspective, the proposal required a sensitive approach. The surrounding street scene consisted predominantly of two-storey dwellings, so we worked closely with the local authority to ensure the design sat comfortably within its context. By carefully considering scale, roof form, materials, and proportions, we were able to demonstrate that the development would enhance rather than detract from the character of the area.

The result is a well-balanced home that feels entirely in keeping with its surroundings — while delivering a substantial uplift in living space, including a modern open-plan kitchen and improved internal layout.

Projects like this highlight the potential hidden within many bungalows, where extending upwards can unlock significant value without increasing the footprint.
