Yes, now's the time. Get your trees checked before the October and November storms arrive. Ash dieback has weakened plenty of established ash round here. In a gale it's usually a dead or brittle limb that comes down first, and you often can't see it from the ground. Thin the crown a bit or take the deadwood out now. You'll often get clumps of fresh shoots coming out lower down the trunk too, because the tree's struggling. Infected ash turns brittle quicker than most people expect. No, you can't always prune or fell a tree in your own garden without permission. Some trees have a Tree Preservation Order on them. Others sit in a conservation area, and parts of Wentworth and Wickersley are. In either case the council has to say yes first. Get it wrong and the fine can hit £20,000. Crown reductions count too. So does heavy pruning, not just taking a tree down. We've been working on trees round Rotherham for over 20 years and we check a tree's status every time before a saw comes out. Not sure about yours? They'll find out if there's a TPO on it or if you're in a conservation area, Wentworth or Wickersley for example. Then they'll tell you straight what the work will do to the tree's health. Can a tree with root rot be saved? Sometimes. It comes down to how far the rot's got and whether the root plate is still holding firm.

Things to look for. Fungi round the base. A lean that wasn't there before. Soil lifting on one side. Crown going thin at the top. Round here mining subsidence can shift the ground as well, and that damages roots too.

Autumn storms are due in October and November. That's usually when a weak root plate brings oaks and sycamores down.

Yes, we can safely take a tree down right next to a house or under power lines. We just don't drop it in one go. Near buildings it comes down in sections. Each piece gets lowered on ropes, nothing's left to fall. Power lines? We check the clearances before anyone goes up. Lots of the big ash round here has ash dieback. Honestly, I can't give you a fair price on tree work till I've stood next to the tree. Lots goes into it. How tall is it? How close to the house? Sometimes it comes down in one go. Other times it has to come down in sections. We need room to get the chipper in too. Want the stump ground out? That adds to it. Ash with dieback goes brittle, so it takes more care to climb. Done right, crown reduction won't harm a mature tree. Often it's the best way to keep one you'd hate to lose. On a big oak or sycamore we cut the outer branches back to healthy growth points. Height comes down. So does the spread. The tree keeps its natural shape. Thinning's a different job. We take out selected inner branches so light and wind get through, and that takes the strain off the canopy. Near Wickersley or Wentworth? We check for conservation area or TPO restrictions first. Yes, you can get rid of a stump without digging it out. We grind it down below ground level. Then you can returf or replant. Leave a big oak or sycamore stump and it'll rot for years. People trip on it. It sends suckers right across the lawn too. The grinder turns the lot into chippings, and you can keep those for mulch.
