Yes, you really can be fined up to £20,000 per tree for unauthorised work. Catches people out round here all the time. Got a TPO on your tree? Or you're in a conservation area like Wentworth or Wickersley? You'll need written consent from the council before any pruning or felling. Even on your own land. Crown reductions count too, not just removals. At Rotherham Tree Services we handle the application side with you, so nothing gets started until it's signed off. Want to know if an arborist actually knows their stuff? Ask for NPTC or City & Guilds tickets for chainsaw and aerial work. Check they've got proper public liability insurance. Any trained arborist will hand it all over, no fuss.

Look at their kit while you're at it. Frayed ropes. Blunt saws. Tells you plenty.

Matters even more round Wickersley's conservation area. Get a TPO wrong, you're looking at a £20,000 fine.

If your tree's leaning after wind, or the soil round the base has cracked or lifted, root plate's likely gone. Needs looking at fast. Root rot's trickier. You'll often spot bracket fungi at the base. Thinning canopy too. Dead branches high up. Round Rotherham we see it a lot in older beech and ash. Old mining subsidence shifts the ground beneath, makes it worse. Can you fell a tree leaning toward the house or near the power lines? Yes. Not by dropping it whole though. We section it down bit by bit with ropes and rigging, lowering each cut nice and controlled. Near overhead cables we always liaise with Northern Powergrid first. Nobody touches live lines. Ever.

Loads of the mature ash round Rotherham has dieback now. Makes the timber brittle. Makes the job trickier too, so worth getting eyes on it early.

Yes, we can still trim your hedge March to August. But we've got to watch for nesting birds. It's against the law to disturb an active nest, simple as that.

Here's how we do it at Rotherham Tree Services. We check the hedge properly first. If it's clear, we crack on. Find nesting activity? We come back once the chicks have fledged.

Cost depends on size. Species matters. Access too. What's underneath the tree. Whether it's near power lines or hanging over the neighbour's roof.

A mature ash with dieback leaning over a shed? Totally different job to a straightforward sycamore sat in an open garden. Chuck a TPO into the mix, or a conservation area like Wentworth, now you've got paperwork on top.
