Why sustainable materials matter in garden design.

Every decision made within a garden project has an environmental impact - from planting choices to the materials used for structures, decking and outdoor spaces. Selecting responsibly sourced, long-lasting materials is an important part of creating gardens that are not only beautiful, but also sustainable for the future.

That's why we're delighted to welcome Kebony as a new Affiliated Business Partner of the SGLD.

Kebony's innovative technology enhances sustainably sourced wood to create a durable, low-maintenance material that offers an environmentally responsible alternative to tropical hardwoods. Designed to stand the test of time, it enables designers to specify natural timber with confidence, balancing aesthetics, performance and sustainability.

As garden designers continue to place greater emphasis on reducing environmental impact, partnerships with organisations committed to innovation and responsible material sourcing are more important than ever.

How much time do you spend on site surveys? For most landscape and garden designers, it's one of the most time-consuming parts of the job — and often one of the least visible to clients.

Introducing Moasure® - our latest Affiliated Business Partner.

They say: "The Moasure 2 Series comprises motion-based measuring tools that help landscape professionals capture accurate site measurements quickly, reducing surveying time, labour costs and the environmental impact associated with traditional methods.

Moasure 2 and Moasure 2 PRO measure as users move from point to point, capturing distance, area, perimeter, elevation and volume without requiring phone signal, Wi-Fi, line of sight or GPS. The Moasure app generates scaled drawings as you walk, which can be exported to CAD.

For landscape designers, a site survey that might traditionally require two people and several hours can often be completed by one person in less time, helping reduce labour costs, minimise repeat site visits and accelerate project delivery.

For some projects, landscape professionals use Moasure 2 PRO to capture site data rather than commissioning an external topographical survey, reducing upfront project costs — savings that can improve profitability or be passed on to clients. Trusted by 100,000+ professionals worldwide, the Moasure 2 Series helps landscape designers to spend less time measuring and more time creating exceptional outdoor spaces."

**Sharing the Vision**

In his latest column for our Garden Design Journal, John Wyer FSGLD argues that a garden's long-term success depends on creating a shared understanding between the designer, client, and gardener, supported by clear communication and realistic maintenance planning.

John explains that one of the biggest reasons gardens lose their impact over time isn't poor design, but a lack of understanding about how they should be cared for.

His article stresses the importance of involving the gardener or maintenance team from the start, and he advises designers to share their design vision, explain the purpose behind planting choices, and set realistic maintenance expectations to preserve the original intent and beauty of a landscape and ensure the garden continues to thrive.

Based in St Albans, Hertfordshire, Jane Thomas creates beautiful gardens with a strong emphasis on purpose, sustainability and creating thriving outdoor environments that enrich everyday life.

Set against the backdrop of a beautiful period home, this project set out to reinterpret the classic English country garden for modern family living.

An outdated garden and planting scheme was transformed into a series of purposeful, connected spaces - from generous entertaining areas and colourful borders to a productive kitchen garden and places for play and sport. The result is a vibrant, layered landscape designed for modern family life.

This week, we are delighted to congratulate Jane on passing her second project in the SGLD accreditation process meaning she is now just one step away from becoming a fully Registered Member - a significant milestone and a testament to her talent.

Congratulations Jane - we look forward to following the next stage of your journey.
