🐀 I BET YOU’VE GOT RATS IN YOUR DRAINS…

It might sound dramatic, but rats living and travelling through drainage systems is incredibly common.

Sewers and drains give rats pretty much everything they need: shelter, water, warmth and access to food. They’re also excellent swimmers and climbers, so underground drainage networks provide ideal routes for them to move between different areas.

Most of the time, you’d never even know they were down there.

The problem starts when there’s a defect in your private drainage system. A cracked pipe, damaged rest bend, redundant drain, poorly sealed connection or damaged gully can give a rat an opportunity to leave the drain and get underneath your property.

From there, they can find their way into cavities, kitchens, lofts and other parts of the building.

It’s something I come across regularly. People can spend weeks trapping or baiting rats inside a property, but if they’re continually entering through a damaged drain, you’re dealing with the rats rather than the reason they’re getting in.

That’s why a CCTV drain survey can be such an important part of investigating recurring rat problems.

If you keep hearing scratching in the walls or loft, or the rats disappear after treatment only to come back again, it might be worth looking underground.
